The first title, Killed at the Whim of a Hat, is now $0.99 at both Kindle and Kobo US. Be careful - there are two versions - one Hachette, one St. Martins. The St. Martins one is much more expensive than the $0.99 Hachette one. The links below should take you to the $0.99 one, but just check before you buy...

The Daughter of Time, by Josephine Tey, which is one of my favorite mystery novels, has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US, as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal. (I'm a member of the Richard III Society, so am somewhat biased...)

link: https://www.amazon.com/Daughter-Time...dp/B00AB194RS/

Spoiler:
Quote:
"One of the best mysteries of all time" (The New York Times)—Josephine Tey recreates one of history’s most famous—and vicious—crimes in her classic bestselling novel, a must read for connoisseurs of fiction, now with a new introduction by Robert Barnard.

Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world’s most heinous villains—a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother’s children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the usurpers of England’s throne? Grant determines to find out once and for all, with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard Plantagenet really was and who killed the Little Princes in the Tower.

The Daughter of Time is an ingeniously plotted, beautifully written, and suspenseful tale, a supreme achievement from one of mystery writing’s most gifted masters.

The Skull Mantra is the first in the Inspector Shan Tao Yun series by Eliot Pattison. Per SYKM, it won the 2000 Edgar Award for Best First Novel. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Skull-Mantra-...dp/B003J5UIGY/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-skull-mantra

Spoiler:
Quote:
Winner of the 2001 Edgar Award for Best First Novel, The Skull Mantra was a sensation when first published and received wide acclaim from critics and readers alike. The Skull Mantra is ranked as a novel about a people and a place--the Tibetans of the high Himalayas--as it is a gripping thriller.

The corpse is missing its head and is dressed in American clothes. Found by a Tibetan prison work gang on a windy cliff, the grisly remains clearly belong to someone too important for Chinese authorities to bury and forget. So the case is handed to veteran police inspector Shan Tao Yun. Methodical, clever Shan is the best man for the job, but he too is a prisoner, deported to Tibet for offending someone high up in Beijing's power structure. Granted a temporary release, Shan is soon pulled into the Tibetan people's desperate fight for its sacred mountains and the Chinese regime's blood-soaked policies. Then, a Buddhist priest is arrested, a man Shan knows is innocent. Now time is running out for Shan to find the real killer.

The Skull Mantra is the winner of the 2000 Edgar Award for Best First Novel.

From the critically acclaimed, award-winning S. J. Rozan comes her finest novel to date - an explosive novel about the corrosive power of secrets and corruption in a small town.

In the middle of the night, private investigator Bill Smith is awakened by a call from the NYPD. They're holding a 15-year-old kid named Gary -- a kid Bill knows. But before Bill can find out what is going on, Gary escapes Bill's custody into the dark night and unfamiliar streets. Bill, with the help of his partner Lydia Chin, tries to find the missing teen and uncover what it is that led him so far from home. Tracking Gary's family to a small town in New Jersey, Bill finds himself in a town where nothing matters but high school football, where the secrets of the past - both the town's and Bill's own - threaten to destroy the present. And if Bill is to have any chance of saving Gary and preventing a tragedy, he has to both unravel a long buried crime and confront the darkness of his own past.

Winter and Night is the winner of the 2003 Edgar Award for Best Novel.

A few more bargains @ 99 cents from UK-based publishers (available to Canada and the UK, and sometimes also the US, from most retailers; a lot of the previous Headline/Hodder/etc. stuff from upthread is still on sale ):

Two more price-drops to add to the giant $0.99/£0.99+ Paul Doherty sale from Headline upthread valid for Canada/US/UK (maybe a few more regular-priced books have dropped to the higher tiers, but I didn't really check for those):

A Shrine of Murders, 1st in the Kathryn Swinbrooke series starring a medieval physician & Isabella and the Strange Death of Edward II technically a non-fiction medieval true crime

It looks like the earlier Sphere sale in the UK has partially expired, but in Canada we can now get the following for $1 CAD:

Some dual $0.99/£0.99 bargains for Canada/UK from Hodder and Orion's Phoenix imprint:

Cross post to the "Open Road $0.99" thread, where a number of different books have dropped to $0.99, including titles by:
  • Joan Hess
  • Aaron Elkins
  • Robert Goldsborough
  • Christianna Brand
  • Charlotte MacLeod
  • Patricia Wentworth
  • Harry Kemelman
  • J. Michael Orenduff
and others...

The original links in the thread (three up top for mysteries, romance and non-fic, and one a few posts down for sci-fi) still work to pull up a mixture of Open Road's PD titles and the $0.99 sale titles.

The links are not perfect - what genre a title is listed under can be odd at times. So what I tend to do is to find an author with some sale titles, then go to that author's Kindle page and sort by price to see everything by that author at $0.99. This time around there aren't a lot (typically 3 - 6 or so) by any one author, unlike the other recent Open Road $0.99 sale or the pre-holiday Open Road freebie bonanza, where there were long lists for some authors.

And many of these have been on sale before, but I still managed to fill in a few holes...

X-link to the DRM-free thread for a new StoryBundle:

The Noir Bundle curated by Nick Mamatas, a former co-editor at Clarkesworld magazine, contains a mix of backlist and indie crime novels, with two notable vintage reprints from the late British authors Stephen Knight (author of the influential speculative true crime work Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution (Wikipedia)) and Elizabeth Jenkins, with a 1934 novel based on a true crime case, which won her the Prix Femina literary prize (Wikipedia).

Free on Amazon UK - The Missing Witness by Jo Smedley

Spoiler:
We are never too old to find out the truth…

Irene Franks is a pensioner, who fancies herself to be a bit of a sleuth.

Ruth Sinclair is a bored young housewife and stay at home mother to her toddler daughter Lillian.

They meet one day when Irene jumps in a frozen pond to rescue a dog, and Ruth takes her back to her house to warm up.

Soon, an unlikely friendship develops, and the next thing you know Irene and Ruth are walking around a crime scene…and figuring out things even the police missed.

When a local woman named Lesley Cooper is murdered, Irene sets out to prove that the victim’s ex-husband, Russ, is not the culprit.

The pair determine Russ has been living in the attic of his former home, just above where the murder occurred.

Following the murder he panicked and moved to the attic of the rental next door, which is where Irene and Ruth find him.

They convince him to turn himself into the police, then set about proving he is not the killer.

Soon they discover Lesley’s own father, Geoff Allenby, disappeared twenty years earlier, and is presumed dead.

Irene is convinced the cases are connected, and sets about to prove it, no matter what it takes.

Their search will take them to a women’s roller derby league, as well as collecting for charity with Irene dressed as a vicar, gate-crashing a funeral, and lead to Ruth applying for a job at Lesley’s old company, where her long-gone father happened to work as well.

It’s a nice break from the boredom of being a housewife for Ruth, but how many lies will she have to tell her husband Lucus?

And will they get caught?

Free on Amazon UK - The Ballad of the Running Man by Shelley Smith

Spoiler:
A new life, a new name, a new way to die…

On the Alps, in the summer of 1960, two schoolteachers discover a gruesome sight – a corpse of a murdered man.

How the corpse came to be there is the story of Rex and Paula Buchanan.

A restless and spirited man always on the look out for some new adventure, Rex Buchanan was in the RAF and then earns money, writing pulp fiction novels.

Paula once dreamt of being a famous actress but Rex’s writing career is steady enough that she can spend her days idle.

One day, Rex comes home with a fantastic plot idea for his next novel – ‘The Ballad Of The Running Man’.

A man insures his life and with the aid of his wife, pretends to fall ill and eventually ‘dies’.

In reality, he simply takes on a new identity and waits until it’s safe for his wife to join him with the insurance money at hand.

Paula thinks it’s a brilliant novel in the making.

Except Rex wants him and Paula to act it out in real life.

At first, Paula wants nothing to do with Rex’s little scheme but once the seed is in her head, she can’t help but think what a lark it would all be…

And so Rex insures his life, falls ‘ill’ and eventually dies. In the meantime, he prepares his and Paula’s new life.

While Paula, the hysterical, grieving widow, convinces the doctor to sign a death certificate without even seeing the ‘body’.

The insurance company is even easier to convince – the young man appeared smitten over her anyway – and soon, Paula Buchanan vanishes.

While some way, away, ‘Mr and Mrs Jerome’, a quiet, unremarkable married couple, move in to an equally quiet and unremarkable neighbourhood.

But already, both Rex and Paula are planning their next fraud, their next ‘death’ ploy, their next identities.

They go from identity to identity, getting richer and richer with each new life.

But money has a way of corrupting people and Rex and Paula find themselves suspicious of everyone, including each other.

And then one day, whilst staying in Switzerland, a young man recognises Paula, greeting her as ‘Mrs Buchanan’.

But Paula hasn’t the faintest clue who this young man is…

Free on Amazon UK - Late of this Parish (Inspector Gil Mayo Mystery Book 5) by Marjorie Eccles

Spoiler:
The Reverend Cecil Willard is not one of those born to be loved…

A scholarly and austere man, ex-headmaster of the local boys’ school, his stern moral principles and die-hard opinions have never endeared him either to those close to him or to his neighbours in the village in which he has lived and worked for so many years.

The debilitating effects of a recent stroke have only made him more bad-tempered and difficult to live with — as his only child, Laura, knows all too well.

Yet despite his often aggravating personality and presence, no one could ever imagine doing him any real harm…until the discovery of his murdered body at the foot of the altar steps in the church shocks the whole community.

As DCI Gil Mayo begins his investigations into the murder, he soon discovers that there are plenty of people in Castle Wyvering who had cause to resent the old man, and one at least who had reason to fear him for the knowledge he possessed.

But the question remains: why has Willard been killed?

Each interview seems to produce another viable suspect, from his submissive daughter to his animal-loving neighbours, his troubled gardener to the prospective headmasters for the local Uplands House School.

Mayo’s investigation leads him down more than one strange path.

What does the power struggle for the Headship of the school, or the shooting of three badgers, have to do with Willard’s murder?

And who is the mysterious Sara mentioned in his diary?

The answers only begin to appear after Mayo’s inquiries reach out beyond Wyvering and begin to connect up with another case in nearby Hurstfield…and the final solution to the murder will not become apparent until the killer has struck one more time…

Free on Amazon UK - Fugitive's Road by Angus MacVicar

Spoiler:
Peter Campbell, a reasonably unassuming man, who had grown up in South Africa, is taking his Bentley for a drive around the picturesque Scottish countryside when he spots a young lady, seemingly in need of help…

After driving her to the bank, he waits to make sure she isn’t stranded, only to hear gunfire…

Soon, the woman and two burly, masked robbers come hurtling out of the bank and into his car.

Peter soon realises he’s become an accomplice to a bank robbery, and by the sounds of it, murder!

Directed by the two male thugs, things don’t go so smoothly and the car ends up in a ditch.

Bloody, disorientated and in fear of the looming sirens, Peter has no idea what to do.

Should he turn himself in?

Or should he run?

He finds an envelope left by the robbers addressed to a Mr Andrew McLeish - perhaps this man is the key to clearing his name…

It soon becomes apparent, while listening to radio and reading that papers, that Peter is the prime suspect and the ostentatious Bentley was easily traced back to him.

On the run from the law, Peter’s only choice is to find Andrew McLeish, but who can he trust?

Free on Amazon UK - Promised Lies (A Detective Blanchette Mystery Book 1) by Marguerite Ashton

Spoiler:
Detective Lily Blanchette has a lot on her plate…

Her sister Celine has recently been murdered, her parents are on the brink of divorce, and Lily has married a man she barely knows while on the rebound.

Now she’s lead on a multiple murder investigation, and determined to catch her man.

Her father, Detective Collin Blanchette, is very proud of his daughter and plans to help her anyway he can.

Six months after Lily’s sister’s death, the bodies of two young women are discovered. One look at the way the bodies have been posed, and Lily knows her sister’s killer is back.

And she’s determined to get him.

Lily visits the family of victim Tanya O’Neal and knows her cousin is hiding something.

It doesn’t take long for her to discover that Tanya, wanting to go to college in Texas, was offering her services as a masseuse on the social networking site Scatter.

Tanya had arranged to meet a man going by the handle CtryGeek23. Lily thinks finding the man behind the account is key to solving the case.

But CtryGeek23 is very clever, and Lily has her work cut out for her. Then one day a young man calls the station, saying he saw his neighbour pushing around a young woman in his yard the night the two dead women went missing.

This leads Lily and her team to Thomas Sanchez, just as she learns the DNA found on Tanya comes from a family member.

As Lily digs around she learns Thomas was fired from his job at a local brewery.

She visits the owner to learn why, and discovers the body of another young woman.

But the more she digs, the more she thinks there is more than one murderer at work, and CtryGeek23 is the mastermind.

But who is he?

And how will they catch him?

As the investigation comes to life, death hits closer to home, and Lily realises she’s married to a stranger. And then Lily
discovers she may not be who she thinks she is at all.
