Enough Rope is the fourth in the Hakim and Arnold series by Barbara Nadel. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I have quite liked Nadel's Çetin Ikmen series, set in Istanbul, expensive though some of the titles are, but haven't had a chance to try this series.

Private investigator and ex-soldier Lee Arnold and police superintendent Paul Venus are by no means friends, but when Venus' son Harry is kidnapped and ransom demands arrive from an address in Arnold's patch in east London, the superintendent doesn't know who else to turn to.

Arnold and his Muslim assistant Mumtaz Hakim soon find themselves chasing leads into several of the East End's uneasily coexisting communities. Mumtaz uncovers a link to one of the area's powerful Bangladeshi families, whose property empire has always seemed suspicious, while Arnold suspects the involvement of more old-fashioned East End gangsters, and wonders if some of the nastier rumours about Venus himself might be true.

And neither Mumtaz nor Lee like the look of the children of the super-rich, arriving in droves in the trendy parts of Hoxton and Shoreditch and living in luxury just a stone's throw from grinding urban poverty.

The truth, however, is stranger and more dangerous than either Arnold or Hakim imagine.

Enough Rope is a powerful and thrilling novel of London's ever-evolving dark side.

There’s a time for peace, and a time for vengeance…

Erich Mueller knows that it isn’t a coincidence that his old colleague Gerhard Kohner should show up, looking for him after all these years.

Nor is it a coincidence that Kohner shows up, just as the Israelis find him. A time for peace is not an option for either man.

They were once loyal Nazi’s and former SS men and their hunters are Israeli Intelligence men, sent to South America to capture them.

The pair may escape the Israelis but Mueller knows his fate is in Kohner’s hands.

More accurately, it’s both in Kohner’s hands and the Director of Britain’s Special Security (Operations) Section.

Staring at a photo – taken in secret of the pair – The Director of the SS(O)S immediately recognises them.

Kohner and Mueller once tortured him but he managed to escape. However, many others – mainly Jewish men and women weren’t so lucky.

The two SS men were a dirty pair; they tortured them, robbed them, promised them freedom and then led them straight to the gas chambers.

And to add to present matters, a new conspiracy orchestrated by East Germany could threaten to destabilise the world – a plan with Kohner at it’s head.

It seems the SS man defected at the end of war, ready to play for any side in return for safety and money.

And Mueller, it seems is the key to this plot. There’s information locked up in that old Nazi’s head.

They must capture Mueller alive before it’s too late and the cunning director already has a plan in mind…

He sends his best agents to East Berlin, James Dingle and Glyn Jones to Berlin alongside an FBI agent Jason Ritchie.

Meanwhile, the clock is ticking as with every passing hour, Kohner is torturing Mueller within an inch of his life to give up what he knows.

And with Mueller, his one weakness – his wife, Hilde – might be the final push.

If Dingle, Jones and Ritchie pull off the director’s plan, then he and the Israelis will finally have a time for vengeance…
