It's certainly true that Amazon have a much more generous exchange and return policy than Kobo. Don't expect any sympathy from Kobo if you want to return a device unless it's demonstrably faulty.

Return that Kindle and risk your account being closed.

Of course, Wolf, whenever you compare Kobos with anything Kobo wins. It's automatic.

I have 3 older Kobos and I find them to be very good devices. I also have the 4 latest lighted e-ink Kindles and I think they're excellent. I've never had problems with any of them. I've bought 2 e-ink devices with problems: a Paperwhite 2 when they first came out with defective 3G, which Amazon replaced immediately, and a Kobo Aura which starts turning pages if I apply much pressure near the base while holding it. I decided to live with that problem although I'm sure Kobo would have replaced it but they're just too hard to get in touch with.

As far as screens, every screen I've ever bought on any e-ink device has always been perfect. I've bought a lot of them for myself over the years and for my retirement home neighbors over the years. Both Kindles and Kobos, and all have had perfect screens.

It makes a lot of sense for Amazon and Kobo to butt heads and compete and the more they do it the better off we are. But we're customers and I can't really see much point in us competing.

Anyway, Katie, if you're still reading at this point I suggest getting whichever one you feel comfortable with. That's the only device that'll work properly for you. The other one, whichever that might be, is a piece of junk.

Actually, Wolf, that felt pretty good. I'm beginning to like competing.

Of course, that only happens if you've been returning a suspiciously large number of items recently.

And you also get multiple warning emails telling you your return ratio is worrisome... before your account is actually at risk of closure.

I've had an Amazon account since 1998 and I typically return 2 or 3 major items a year. Each and every time Amazon has been very nice about it and they've never seemed to mind at all. A couple of times it was even their suggestion that I return something when it turned out to be not quite what I expected.

I've never heard of anyone having their account closed because they returned something to Amazon. If there's a more user friendly company I sure don't know what it is.

When I bought my Kobo Mini during their closeout sale a couple years ago I couldn't get their website to take my credit card. It's a perfectly good card but it just wouldn't work. So I tried calling them and I was unable to find a way to get through to them. I emailed them. I tried every day to purchase it again hoping they'd solved their problem and when it failed each time I tried again to find a way to call them. Finally I got an email telling me that one of their service people would call me tomorrow and asking me to please stay home that day because they don't know what time the call will come. I'm retired so that's not a problem but for a lot of people it would have been.

They did call and the guy was extremely polite and very helpful and he had to do some digging to solve the problem but he used a bit of imagination and the purchase was made. In my only encounter with Kobo's service I found them to be excellent once I got hold of them, but I don't think I'll ever go through that again.

That's a big improvement over B&N. The 3 or 4 times I've called them I got them on the phone right away and the person on the other end seemed eager to find an excuse not to help me, and they always did. The sum total of assistance I've ever gotten from B&N is nothing.

Every time I have an issue with something from Amazon they're on the phone in less than a minute and it always seems like their life depends on making me happy. In fact, having read that NY Times article, maybe it does.

I think we can all agree that Amazon is bigger and more powerful than a company should be but that's the world we live in and, at least for the present, Amazon is putting a lot of effort into handling their power responsibly. Any concerns for the future with this in mind are completely understandable but for the moment they're making sure they're the good guys with reference to their customers.

Nope. It's based on reading messages on MR and not my opinion.

I once called Amazon because an item I ordered dropped in price 2 or 3 days after I placed the order. The person on the phone said because it had already shipped, the price could not be reduced. I had to come up with the solution which was to charge the card used the difference.

I haven't received any warning notices from amazon. Even with me being un happy with a refub as I said in an earlier post on here THEY Offered to let me make payments on PW3... Its been in my cart a week while I make up my mind No Payment offer. This morning the Payment offer was there. So IF they are mad at me Why would they make the offer?
The only other Return I had recently was the New Basic Touch when it came out ...kept loosing my ebooks! I put them on next day the basic would be Empty! 3rd time I returned it with a Huge warning about Software problem! 2 hours after they got it I had my refund!
Only reason I was given that I received the Refurb was they Didn't have any more PW2 & were Not going to be making any more. I actually got the Last Refurb PW2 they had. So now they sending my money back. Since I hate refurbs LOL

I Never deal with B&N They make you use cr card even tho they except gift cards. Even After I closed my account with them they Refused to Remove my sons Cr Card from their computers. Getting that answer out of them took 4 Hours! Mostly on Hold! 10 cent a min on my cell that was Not cheep! My son had to go to his bank have them reissue a new card..another 2 weeks. Neither of us were happy. To say nothing about their Poor CS when I tried to get help with the Nooks! Tons of customers were complaining they buy new not work B&N sent them refurbs some on their 2-3 in less than a month. Thankfully mine were purchased at local book store I did 1 exchange 10 days after I got it & the 2nd one 5 days later I got my cash back! This was Nov 2010!

Katie, have you just considered running 2 separate units? Then you can pick up the other one (reading another story) while the first one is charging. Maybe have short stories or magazines on that one. Another option is to have a 10 foot charging cord (bought one at Walgreens). My sister always falls asleep reading as well and if she plugs it in when she is just tired, it charges while she is asleep.

Must have been a drastic price drop! I always have the luck of ordering things 2 days later the price dropped BUT I Never made a big deal about it.

I did the 10' cord thing on the Literati once Woke up it was wrapped around my neck! Scared the crap out of me!
The few times the PW2 died I switched to reading on my phone while it charged. For some reason they don't sink [?] but wasn't bad. Amazon Phone -- PW2 FYI

It was about $16 in shipping which is a great deal with the exchange rate. Cheaper than a PW3 for me. I paid $84.48 and I ordered it yesterday and today it shipped!

I will always be found of Kindles but that's it for me. I am giving all but my K3 away. I gave my K4s to my niece and her little boy. I'm still working on who gets the PW1. I love my K3. It's flawless screen is what I fell in love with many years ago. I've been reading on it again lately but it is not lit so no in the dark reading. I am keeping my Kindle Fires 2013 & 2014 as I feel they are the last of quality tablets Amazon will put out.

I ordered mine on Thanksgiving morning and received it on Tuesday.

I love being able to adjust the weight of the font. There are also more size choices. I do think page turns are slower but I am getting used to it. I am still getting used to adjusting the light by sliding up and down on the left side. If I ever see the H2O on sale, I might pick it up also.
