I bought the Merriam Webster's Spanish to English and their French to English dictionaries. I want one for Italian to English but none to be found. The Translate feature works sometimes but it's a hassle to turn on WiFi for one word lookup then have to turn it off again.
Hey Blossom, it's been a couple days since you got the dictionaries. I was wondering if you could share your opinion of them. From the reviews at Amazon other buyers didn't seem all that impressed. All the books I read are in English, but some of the old classics have quotes in other languages that I'd kinda like to understand. Of course, understanding the words isn't understanding the phrase, but it's better than nothing.

Thanks!

Did you overlook this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055T26UI/

I never turn off wireless, and Translate is one reason why (but more often Wikipedia lookups). I don't need the thing to go two weeks between charges. It's convenient enough to plug it in every 3 days or so. Have to sleep, eat, work sometime.

French-English, Spanish-English dictionaries are not necessarily going to translate French or Spanish phrases in otherwise English texts. These phrases would need to be tagged with the appropriate lang attribute, and the reading system has to pay attention to the attribute. I have been meaning to do an experiment that proves inline lang attributes are noticed by Paperwhite but haven't gotten around to it.

Even where both of these conditions are met, the Translate feature auto-detects the source language and is going to be a lot more useful in translating a phrase or paragraph than looking words up one at a time.

The translation dictionaries will be useful (for example) when one has a little fluency in French and just needs to translate a word here and there.

They work fine for me. I only need them for words used by characters in the books I read. Of course they do not have modern Spanish slang so that one I still have to Google on my phone but this cuts down on having to use translate for one word.

That wasn't showing up under default dictionaries but !

K to you. I need this although I know some common words it's always good to double check.

Oh and they have German-English too!

I just did my first jailbreak.
It seems that this is the correct order:

- Install Firmware 5.3.1 / 5.3.5
- Install Jailbreak
- Install Firmware 5.3.8
- Install update_combined-dev-certs-20121002_install.bin
- Install update_rescue_pack.bin
- Install update_python_0.6.N_install.bin
- Install update_linkss_0.12.N_install.bin

So, in short: Apply jailbreak, apply latest firmware, install developer certificates & rescue pack, install python and linkss-screensaver

Why do you need so many translation dictionaries? Are you trying to learn all those languages? I'd only use a translation dictionary for a language I'm learning or do not speak well enough to use the normal dictionary.

I only need a normal English one, maybe a Dutch one, and if I ever decided to read a German book, a German one.

Three languages is enough. I already speak one more than most Dutch people, one more than the average English speaker, and three more than the average German or French citizen.

No, that was not a typo... *Rrrrrrruns...*

I need them for books I read where the hero throws out an occasional foreign word or phrase. Historical romances are notorious for this sometimes then there are some modern romances where it happens. I've read a few this last year where I got tired of looking up words through Google. Now I can just press and see the meaning and move on.

I've come across a few books where the non-English words inserted for effect were wrong either typos or the wrong translation altogether. I do remember one describing a still-life where instead of nature-morte, they used presque-vie and another one where Outremer appeared a couple of times as outré-mère Probably a safe bet to say that neither the author nor the editor in those cases were French speakers.

That's just stupid. If one is going to use such words for effect then they better be the correct ones, or it will look exceedingly weird to people who *do* know those words.

And yet, it happens all the time... I can't even remember how often I read things like "and violá, we're done".

One of the nicer examples I recently saw in a german IT magazine was something to the effect of "they are rolling out this and that feature peau à peau" - very romantic indeed!

Indeed. It's frankly plain irritating.
