I just found out yesterday that Dennis Lehane has a new book out in the fall called Live by Night -- pretty happy about that. (No idea what it's actually about, don't even care.)

At least in my humble opinion this is one of the best things about being a heavy book reader like I am. I love the feeling of anticipation of the author will do next with the series. I don't get this a lot of times with those over priced premium books. John Grisham seems to never use the same characters twice in his books, what a disappointment, Clive Cussler does use the same characters again and again however he does not seem to develop his characters over time. I love books series where I wait for the next installment in the series with great anticipation. I also like those well developed characters like in the Mack Bolan books where you get to know the characters to the point that you almost know them like your best friend,

Do you only read series, Nyssa?

I'm waiting for First Shift - Legacy, #6 in the Wool series by Hugh Howey. It hasn't been available as an ebook for a while, due to a new publisher deal, I believe.

Ummm, now that I think about it.....pretty much.

Maybe I should make that a challenge for next year: Read "x" number of standalone books.

Thanks for the idea!

Well, it's much harder to anticipate a stand-alone book - you have nothing to judge it by.

Except the previous stand-alone novels the same author might have written.

I find myself anticipating way more stand-alone books these days than I do books that are part of a series. *shrugs*

Not if you have a favorite author who just happens to be writing a standalone.

Has anyone mentioned the new Lee Child Reacher series book? I saw it advertised for pre-order at our local Waterstones - out towards the end of August, called A Wanted Man.

Oooh yes! That's my most anticipated book at the moment, now that Robert B. Parker is no longer with us.

I would say Cold Days and Doors of Stone are the two I'm most looking forward to right now. There are, of course, several authors whom I look forward to reading whenever they come out with a new book, but the thing about series is once I'm hooked, I want to know what happens next (I guess that's why so many authors write series, isn't it).

There are several other series where while I will be buying the next book, the series is starting to feel like it's starting to lose momentum. Rather than moving forward, the story just seems to run in place.

I've got The annual Years best SF from Gardner Dozois on preorder (it should be released next week) and the lineup of The Best American (stories, essays, science) on preorder due in September...

The books I'm currently anticipating enough to have pre-ordered them; in the order of how much I'm looking forward to them:
  • Derek Landy - Kingdom of the Wicked (#7 in the Skulduggery Pleasant series)
  • JK Rowling - The Casual Vacancy
  • Kalayna Price - Grave Memory (#3 in the Alex Craft series)
  • Rick Riordan - The Mark of Athena (#3 in the Heroes of Olympus series)
  • Chloe Neill - Biting Cold (#6 in the Chicagoland Vampires series)

I've mostly been reading series these days, it seems - especially first books in series; not everything I read is good enough to make me go on. It's not that I have anything against standalone books; there just haven't been many lately that have sounded appealing.

Thank you for mentioning this. I've been meaning to look it up, but didn't know the name. I will probably be adding it to my own "Waiting for" list.
