Waiting for my PE

I expect to receive my PE 7/7 or 7/8. I've been reading up on the next steps to upgrade the device. I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands because I'm having a torn rotator cuff repair on 7/5. When I saw the pEdge on Woot, I decided this would be a good project to keep me sane for the month that my arm has to be in a sling.

I have a few questions.

1. It didn't seem clear if going for the on-line upgrade loads the 2.2 version of the OS.

2. Does the device have to be "rooted" before or after the upgrade (I suspect after).

3. In the opinion of the senior users of the pEdge, are the improvements worth putting up with any instability in the Beta software?

4. I'm not a computer newby, I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I build and rebuild computers as an avocation (I used to do it for a living, but I retired), both PC's and MAC's. Hopefully, if and when I get up to speed, I can contribute to the general Melee of an active forum.

Thanks, in advance for any advice that you can throw my way.

I upgraded while the company was still around, so I'll let those who have upgraded recently respond to #1.

Nope, in fact most of us do not have rooted devices.

I have the EE, but the general consensus is that the PE is even better than the EE after upgrading to the Beta. I think most PE users will tell you to upgrade. It's even worth it on the EE.

2. it has to be rooted after unless you want to do it the really hard way lol(I haven't actually tried to do it, it may not be possible) but after upgrading its just a push of a button.

3. on the PE it is most definately better to upgrade, there is a HUGE speed increase and many users have not noticed any problems... EE its a little harder to choose.

Good to see another non-newbie here! I don't suppose you've done any android development in your time, or linux in general?

Oh sorry, I think I misread your question re: rooting. I thought you were asking whether the device DOES have to be rooted, not whether or not the rooting should occur before or after.

All I meant to say was it does not have to be rooted to use it. (But I guess if you're a non-newbie, then you already knew that.)

Wait and see

Thanks for all the responses. I'll try to get up to speed as fast as possible. The Edge looks like a very nice unit in spite of the Resistive display. One wonders why Entourage went belly-up on this one?

So I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens when I attempt to update the pEdge. If it doesn't work, I guess using a thumb drive with the update in the root directory is the next option. At least that's what I think is the update path.

The other question that I had was has anybody taken advantage of the Amazon Z4root program to access the amazon app store?

Syclone, you don't need z4root to access the Amazon Appstore. You can get that just by telling Amazon you want it! Several people have used z4root on their PEs (and maybe EEs too) in trying to get the Google App store, with some success, I believe! Is that what you meant?

z4root isn't put out by Amazon and you can access the store just fine without using it, not sure if thats what you're asking but i hope it answers your question.
