As I've mentioned before, I wasn't fond of Tom Clancy's politics, but he did write darn good thrillers, especially IMO before he started really letting his politics bleed into them, as in the spin-off Jack Ryan Jr series.

Rainbow Six is the second of his books that features the somewhat mysterious John Clark, rather than Jack Ryan (either Jack Ryan). It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US right now. My memory from reading it many many years ago in DTB was that it was pretty good, and not so much politics as to drive me nuts...of course, YMMV...

In this #1 New York Times bestselling John Clark thriller, author Tom Clancy takes readers into the shadowy world of anti-terrorism and gets closer to reality than any government would care to admit...

Ex-Navy SEAL John Clark has been named the head of Rainbow, an international task force dedicated to combating terrorism. In a trial by fire, Clark is confronted with a violent chain of seemingly separate international incidents. But there is no way to predict the real threat: a group of terrorists like none the world has ever encountered, a band of men and women so extreme that their success could literally mean the end of life on earth as we know it.

British car detective Jack Colby reaches back to WWII to uncover the deadly secrets of a legendary 1937 Alfa Romeo Spyder.

Jack Colby’s old friend, the world-renowned classic-car portraitist Giovanni Donati, has a sweet new gig: paint an exceptionally rare Alfa Romeo Spyder that was last seen racing in Italy’s famed Mille Miglia just before Hitler came to power. Ever since, it’s been resting on its laurels at Plumshaw Manor. But mere hours after he arrives, Giovanni is arrested for murdering a member of the family at their sprawling English estate.

Could he have done it? Is he being framed? If so, why? The investigation leads Jack back to the Second World War—and forward to a vicious rivalry between two aristocratic clans. Now Jack has to dig through a long and mysterious history of betrayal, jealousy, and secret love affairs to prove Giovanni’s innocence. But nothing is as it seems—except for the danger Jack faces as he draws close to the truth.

Death of a Gigolo is the seventeenth and most recent (2019) in the Jaine Austen series by Laura Levine. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (coupon/VIPable).

Quote:
After a dry spell, freelance writer Jaine Austen’s life is suddenly full of romance. For one thing, she’s reconnected with her ex—though her cat, Prozac, isn’t happy about it. And Jaine’s also got a new ghostwriting gig, working on a steamy novel called Fifty Shades of Turquoise . . .

Daisy Kincaid is in her sixties and heiress to a fortune. Now she wants to make a name for herself as a romance author . . . with a little help from Jaine, that is. As Jaine labors away on love scenes, she gets to know the wealthy woman’s gentleman friend, her household staff, and her social circle—every one of whom is horrified when Daisy falls under the spell of a much younger stud named Tommy, a rude, crude lothario who’s made himself a fixture in Daisy’s Bel Air mansion.

After Tommy and Daisy shock everyone by announcing their engagement, it doesn’t take long for someone to stab him in the neck—with the solid gold Swiss Army knife that Daisy gave him as a gift. The challenging part is trying to narrow down the list of suspects. Jaine’s going to have to put a bookmark in that love story and focus all her creative talent into untangling a tale of money and murder . . .

The Body in the Snowdrift is the fifteenth in the Faith Fairchild series by Katherine Hall Page. As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I read and enjoyed a lot of the books in this series in paperback way back in the day, but not so much recently, because the e-books don't seem to go on sale that often. Now, though, Snowdrift has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, which is nice.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000R4LGIE
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000R4LGIE
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...-the-snowdrift

Spoiler:
Quote:
Caterer Faith Fairchild has a bad feeling about her father-in-law's decision to celebrate his seventieth birthday with a family reunion ski week at the Pine Slopes resort in Vermont -- the Fairchilds' favorite getaway since Faith's husband, the Reverend Thomas Fairchild, was a toddler. At first her unease seems unfounded -- until Faith comes across a corpse on one of the cross-country trails, the apparent victim of a heart attack.

Then one catastrophe follows another: the mysterious disappearance of the Pine Slopes' master chef, a malicious prank at the sports center, a break-in at the Fairchild condo, the sabotage of a chairlift. And when a fatal "accident" with the snow-making machines stains the slopes blood red, Faith realizes she'll have to work fast to solve a murderous puzzle -- because suddenly not only are the reunion and the beloved resort's future in jeopardy . . . but Faith's life is as well.

The Horse in the Corner is a short story in the Jeff McQuede series by Vickie Britton and Loretta Jackson, who happen to be sisters. I'm not sure of the publication status of the story, but the books in the series (although originally pubbed by someone else, IMS) have been picked up by Thomas & Mercer. And I also read and enjoyed one of the books. And the short story is free, and short, so you won't waste either money or (much) time, but if its possible publication status offends you, skip it...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JJ0QLPY

Spoiler:
Quote:
Zeller’s Fine Jewelry is robbed, and one of the partners, Clark Zeller, dies of a single bullet wound to his heart. Sheriff Jeff McQuede believes that this crime is no simple robbery. Clark Zeller has been running against Morris Burton for the U.S. Senate, and the two have been involved in an ugly campaign. Did Burton have Zeller killed in a mock robbery because he was hiding some secret Zeller intended to make public? Or was Zeller murdered by his business partner or because of one of his many underhanded schemes?

When the getaway car is found with a dead robber inside and a witness who saw a passenger escape into the woods, McQuede searches for a runaway thief who might provide the link between Zeller’s murder and Morris Burton. If such a link exists and Burton has decided to rid himself of the killers he’d hired to shoot Zeller, how will McQuede be able to outwit this clever politician and prove his guilt?

Maxwell's House is the first in MJ Trow's Peter Maxwell (also known as Mad Max) series. It is free right now at Kindle US and UK. For moderators who may not be familiar with this series, it was originally conventionally published by St. Martins. This is one of the series that I remember discovering on business trips to the UK, from which I used to come back with half-a-suitcase full of DTB books that were hard/impossible to find in the US, as well as having a couple in the cabin with me for the flight home .

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxwells-Ho...dp/B08NJZQ6Z3/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Book one in the Mad Max series.

Two men had the job of tracing seventeen-year-old Jenny Hyde's killer. One was Chief Inspector Henry Hall, an elitist cop of the old school, who was driving in one direction only - to the top. It was his job. His territory.

The other was Peter Maxwell – ‘Mad Max’ - widower, film buff, golden-hearted cynic, and bow-tied, eccentric teacher under suspension and suspicion. Maxwell didn't have to become involved at all. But he was so involved he didn't know how to get out.

Jenny had been one of his students. Peter Maxwell was mad enough and determined to find her killer.

If you missed this three years ago, when it was on sale for $2.99, it's now on sale for $3.75 at Kindle US. Not quite as good a price, but it's the first in a classic series, and doesn't go on sale very often. So if you want it, this might be the time...

The link below is still good.

Firedrake's Eye is the first in the short three-book Simon Ames/David Becket series by Patricia Finney, who is perhaps better known via her pen name, PF Chisholm, under which she writes the Sir Robert Carey series. Eye is free right now at Kindle US and UK, and Kobo US. And probably Kobo UK, but I don't check there...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HJSDWQW
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/firedrake-s-eye-1
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08HJSDWQW

Spoiler:
Quote:
An English Catholic fanatic is on his way to England with Spanish gold and a plan to murder Queen Elizabeth I.

Simon Ames knows that if England is conquered by Spain, he and all his family will be taken by the Inquisition, tortured until they confess and then burned at the stake – for being Jews. That’s why he works for the Puritan Sir Francis Walsingham, the Elizabethan M.

When Ames is beaten up in an alleyway off Fleet Street, David Becket, an ex-soldier with an ugly past, kills the attacker and rescues him. But is Becket in league with the assassin himself?

Tom O’Bedlam dances around London with his angels and devils and the Queen Moon. He’s a lunatic, too mad to explain his dreadful secret – that he knows who the assassin is and when he will strike.

Through the mean streets of a dirty and dangerous 16th century London, across thatched rooftops and under London Bridge with its freight of houses and shops, Becket, Ames and Tom fight to find the assassin and kill him before he kills the Queen.

Which of them will die?

Also note that if you like this one, and want to read the remaining two, there is an omnibus of all three that has been on sale occasionally in the past, and might offer a better price if you are patient, even if just for two of the three titles. Info on that is in this previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3993786

A Little Local Murder is an early (1970s) non-series title by Robert Barnard - apparently early enough that it's eligible to be a "Pan Heritage Classic" title, whatever that means...

It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. It was previously on sale in the US, so if you travel, check carefully before you buy!

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AER805G
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AER805G

Spoiler:
Quote:
The news that Radio Broadwich is to make a documentary on Twytching for broadcast in America spreads through the small village like wildfire. Mrs Deborah Withens, Twytching's resident doyenne and arbiter of good taste, takes it upon herself to control the presentation of her 'county town' and assumes responsibility for picking those that will take part, provoking fierce rivalry amongst the villagers.

One resident who is reticent to participate in the fuss is Inspector George Parrish . . . until the murder of the first villager chosen, and a rash of poison pen letters uncovering secrets Twytching's leading citizens had fervently hoped were buried, force him to get involved.

In this early classic, Robert Barnard skilfully demonstrates that no one is more cunning in preparing the reader to expect the totally unexpected and his incisive character portrayals in this early gem impart a dimension rarely found in English detective fiction.
