That's one of the many bootleg versions. The legit version is $10.

But note that it is PD (along with a lot of other Hammett titles) in a very few remaining countries. I got it from Faded Page years ago on a trip to Canada. (Although I believe that Canada's life+50 may be going away with the new NAFTA, whenever that gets put in place...)

So if you are lucky enough to live in or visit one of those places...

Yes, totally agree, not PD in the US. And no one's doing much traveling these days...sigh...

Patricia Finney writes the Sir Robert Carey series under her pen name PF Chisholm. I am quite fond of this series and have enjoyed it over the years.

She also has written a different short three book series, featuring Simon Ames and David Becket, set in roughly the same time frame, using her real name. While on the way to other things, I noticed that there is now an omnibus of these three titles available for $3.99/£3.24 at Kindle US/UK respectively. I'm not sure if this is a sale price, but in any case, with the second and third titles at $4/£4-ish and up, and the first seemingly not available at either Kindle store, at least that I can find, it's a pretty good price if you need/want all three titles.

However, it's also worth noting that, although the omnibus is over $8 at Kobo US, the first title in the series is available and free there. Sigh!

Anyway, here are titles and links...

Elizabethan Noir Trilogy Boxed Set, contains:
  • Firedrake's Eye
  • Unicorn's Blood
  • Gloriana's Torch
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Elizabethan-N...dp/B087QNKXYX/
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Elizabethan...dp/B087QNKXYX/

Firedrake's Eye, #1, free at Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/firedrake-s-eye-1

It's okay I'm making a fuss about it when the truth is, I don't really care

A bootleg copy of a Dashiell Hammett book that should be in PD if we had reasonable copyright laws is hard to get too worked up over.

But if that’s your position, why pay a pirate when you could get it for free from a site that’s legally entitled to provide it?

Just to be clear, I’m not advocating it. But it seems to me that filling a pirate’s coffers is the least appealing of the options. Borrowing it from a library or doing without if you don’t want to pay are always good choices.

I don't disagree. I'm not going to knowingly buy a pirated book. I just don't care enough to go report all those bootleg Maltese Falcon copies to Amazon. There seems to be several bootleg copies of popular crime writers all over Amazon. Dashiell Hammet, Cornell Woolrich, Raymond Chandler. I'm sure others.

Just curious -- because I sure wouldn't pay for a non-legit product either -- if someone from Country A sells a book that is public domain in Country A and everywhere else except Countries X,Y, Z where it isn't public domain does that make it a pirate edition for everybody or just the buyers from X,Y,Z?

It would cost a little over $1,000 to buy all 108-109 of these things.

$1.99 is a GREAT price for the purchase of one!

Now $1.99 at Kindle US as part of the Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US. Links below are still good. The start of a great series...
