Aww, what fun is that?

I'm just irritated that King made such a big deal of supporting the kindle, and then either changed his mind or just didn't care enough to make sure his publisher went along. King has supported ebooks longer than most, and I find this strange, is all.

Dear Constant Readers,

Please don't believe the press reports that the e-book reader price for Under the Dome will be $35. This was the result of confusion from a press release from the publisher, what Big Jim Rennie would call a clustermug. It is true that you cannot order the book as an e-download until December 24th, but the physical book, which is a beautiful thing, you can pre-order for less than $9--so who's better than us?

Steve
Still disappointed

Someone may have linked to this earlier in the thread, but here are some comments from King on the subject:

Article

Sounds like it's at least partially his idea to keep the eBook from coming out at the same time, in order to "help bookstores".

This doesn't make the slightest bit of sense to me. Even with the popularity of ebooks/ereaders, I can't imagine they cut into the profits of B&M bookstores much more than Amazon already does. However, I can see how selling the hardcover for $9 at Amazon and big-box stores would definitely have a negative impact on bookstores.

I feel bad for the Stephen King fans.

I would have pre-ordered it as a reasonably priced eBook.
Now I'll wait until it's out at a reasonable eBook price and then decide based on reviews of it at that time.
So, in my case, all they manage to do is to turn a guaranteed pre-sell into a possible sale at the same price, but later.

seems odd doesn't it that the publishers are slitting their own throats? the delay on publishing to e-print is not going to convince me to buy a hardcover.
Except it look like this time it was the authors idea, or at least has his support...

In an interview, Mr. King said that he wanted to delay the e-book edition in hopes of helping independent bookstores and the national bookstore chains sell the hardcover edition.

"I never thought we'd see people preordering a copy for $8.98," he said. "My thinking was to give bookstores a chance to make some money."

And he seriously thinks it won't be uploaded somewhere, multiple places, within hours of release?

Has he no clue how many sales he'll be missing?

No need to chop it up. We have a device in my Library which is exquisitely expensive that actually turns each page of the book, and scans it. We are digitizing all the books which are damaged by age.

If you are prepared to chop the book up, you could quite easily scan a 1000 page novel to a pdf at 600dpi in around 20 minutes on a half-decent copier.

You could then feed that into the latest ABBYY finereader and OCR it with 99.9% accuracy, with original formatting, in around 2 hours on a sufficiently powerful PC.

What's more, both stages are fully automated processes.

Six weeks isn't too long to wait," he added. :

I used to buy King's books as soon as they were released (back when hardbacks cost $25!) and looked forward to reading them. He was one author where I wouldn't wait for the paperback. So, to me, six weeks is too long to wait. I am going to download it as soon as I am able.

If King had handled this differently (Oh, my publisher insisted . . .) I would have bought the ebook when it came out. I really do believe in rewarding authors. But King just said f$#% you. "F$#& you right back.

Not really. I love you, but I'm not going to be manipulated into buying a hardcover I don't want, or waiting breathlessly for an ebook I do.
