In another shot at the e-market, King's e-book will not be released until Dec. 24, virtually the end of the holiday season and a month after the hardcover.
Which will just likely encourage more folks to get the pirated version over a month earlier.

I wouldn't blame King for something that the publishing house is doing.

seems odd doesn't it that the publishers are slitting their own throats? the delay on publishing to e-print is not going to convince me to buy a hardcover.

F**k them.

I was hoping to buy the hardback for my dad ($9+shipping) and the Kindle $9.99 edition for me. Maybe I'll just cancel my hardback preorder and wait for the library to get it/steal a digital copy for myself.

Instead of getting $20, they'll get nothing while I still get to read the book.

I'll spend $9 on the hardcover because I have all of King's books. But I'll also download it as soon as it's pirated and read it on my e-reader. And send a polite e-mail to the publisher letting them know how much I enjoyed reading it on my e-reader device. Maybe someday they'll get it.

I think people need to realize we don't actually know WHAT the price for the Kindle book will be, regardless of the article.

Amazon sometimes lists new K books at a slightly higher price, maybe $2-3 more, but they always go down once the furor has passed....

Agreed! There are plenty of times you see book for $20 or more and they turn out to be discounted to $9.99 right off the get go so we will see how things go

Scanning a pbook is not as tough as it once was.
If you are prepared to chop the book up, you could quite easily scan a 1000 page novel to a pdf at 600dpi in around 20 minutes on a half-decent copier.

You could then feed that into the latest ABBYY finereader and OCR it with 99.9% accuracy, with original formatting, in around 2 hours on a sufficiently powerful PC.

What's more, both stages are fully automated processes.

I did pre-order the hard cover. King is one where I will always have a hard back version for my "library".

I don't mind paying a bit more for the ebook version but not $35. So I'll have to see what the Kindle price is. I may have to go to that place I've never visited to get a copy and replace it when the price is more reasonable.

Worse. It's a very dark place full of one-eyed sailors who don't look anything like Johnny Depp.

Consider yourself lucky you can even buy books from big name authors. In the UK I did a Kindle book search for Stephen King and couldn't find any of his books. Same with almost every other author I tried. It's a good job I'm confident Amazon will get it sorted eventually or I might think I'd wasted my money.
