There's probably a pretty good reason they're doing this.

Prime is about to get a lot more popular because people are going to want to see the reconstituted Top Gear. Available only from Amazon.

Yes, this is a change in policy for them. I'd hazard a guess it's because Amazon WANTS it's Prime Video available on the Apple tv and Google Chromecast without agreeing to whatever current restriction is preventing them right now.

After all - Netflix, HBO, Hulu are available on Apple Tv, but not Amazon Prime video. I doubt it's Apple just saying "no". It probably has something to do with terms Apple is demanding that Amazon isn't willing to accede to and the rest are.

I had hoped there would be an Amazon Prime app coming for the new Apple Tv as there already iPhone/iPad Prime video apps. This move on Amazon's part is making me wonder if there is more to it than that. And if it is an Apple term/condition that's keeping Amazon at bay -- I really doubt that refusing to sell Apple Tv's will change Apple's stance

One good reason Amazon won't support Chromecast is because they can't have Chromecast on their Fire devices.

In order for Google Cast to function on Android, the device must have Google Play Services, which is a proprietary background service and API package. In order for device manufacturers to include Google Play Services, they must license the package from Google, which results in contractual limitations being placed on the device. These licenses are the primary way Google maintains an iron grip on Android, despite it being open source.

The restrictions Google enforces around Google Cast and Google Play Services means Amazon can never make their own Fire Phone, Fire TV, and line of Fire tablets compatible with Google Cast or the Chromecast.

I'm neither so all I'm interested in the entertainment value.

As I've stated elsewhere, my streamers of choice are XBOX and WDTV live, both of which (for different reasons) are light years ahead of all three products in the catfight.
