Nice question. But I'm inclined to think that most windows are really mirrors, and most mirrors are really windows.

I'm reminded of a semi-mythical conversation between John Lennon and Paul McCartney about 'Hey Jude'. As everyone knows, the song is (apparently?) based on Paul's advice to the young Julian Lennon to accept John's new love, Yoko Ono.

John: 'Hey! This song is about me!'
Paul: 'No, it's about me...'

Window or mirror?

Good point. I'd say I like books with reflecting windows the best (think a shop's window where you can see inside the shop, but can also see a faint reflection of yourself).

Better yet, a two-way mirror - changes what you can see depending on where there is light.

Now Suzanne Vega is singing Tom's Diner in my head.

I guess it's okay. She doesn't really see me 'cause she sees her own reflection.

For some people that's true. But for some others, the contents of one's bookcase may be one or more of the following:
  • Aspirational
  • Reflective of gifts that others think the recipient should own or read
  • Reflective of whomever the owner might have inherited the books from - which, I guess, fits somewhat with the quotation
  • Mere window dressing (as reflected in The Sopranos scene wherein shallow, image-conscious Carmela Soprano tells her lover, Robert Wegler, that a book he's given her will look good on her shelf)

Image deleted - larger than forum rules permit
The deleted image of Carmela peering into the window of Furio's empty house - taken from yet another Sopranos episode ["Eloise” (Season 4, Episode 12; airdate 12/1/2002)] - is visible here.

Both? It really depends on the book. I wouldn't say the books I read mirror my experiences, but they do make me think about what kind of person I am; about my good and bad qualities. Others are a gateway into another world - a daydream. Sometimes one book can provide both experiences for me at the same time. I don't know if that makes sense, but that's how it is for me.
