I have been babysitting the printer for a few hours as several Government submissions are printing (duplex printing to save paper, storage space, and mailing costs.) Tomorrow is the delivery.

Sitting here depressed about the world situation (currently symbolized by Patricia's situation). I'm going to go make a pot of tea, though I don't think that will help much.

We're in a hiring freeze at the university where I work. We haven't had actual layoffs yet, but as staff leave and aren't replaced, we're getting more and more short-handed. Tempers also get frayed and people are less willing to work with each other constructively. I went through this when I worked in industry, and I'm really not looking forward to going through it again in academia.

and unfortunately... that's about as seerious a decision as I need make for the day.

Writing up a dream I had that I think might possibly be a novel. In the dream I was a detective solving a murder mystery without a murder. I'm not sure what it's about so far, but I think I have a title: The Murder of Shadows.

I had a dream yesterday morning that would make an interesting, if very strange novel. The Muffin Man and I had been hired to pull off a con job in order to demolish an indoor swimming pool at a school so the principal would be able to have a window in his office. The con eventually involved convincing a wealthy but unpopular girl to fund the construction of a new swimming pool in a different place, arming the swim team (who all turned out to be veterans) with demolitions, and having the school attacked by a giant flying squid of our acquaintance, who then fell in love with the coach of the swim team (who had been blocking any changes to the swimming pool situation). They got married in a touching ceremony and flew off together to live happily ever after.

I think this one started as one of my more typical "why am I stuck back in school again?" dreams, but things took a more interesting twist early on.

I'd read that novel, all you need is a title and you're good to go

I'm blaming Zelda for my weird detective dream as she re-introduced me to the Thin Man movies and I watched them all in a marathon sitting.

Now how wasn't I supposed to have a detective dream after all that?
