I don't have Windows 10, but I do have a Brother printer and I received a warning email sent to Brother owners which states:

"This notice is for customers using Win10 OS. If you are not using Win10, this notice does not pertain to you. The next major update to Windows 10 is scheduled to be released on August 2nd, 2016.

After your Windows 10 PC has been updated, either automatically or by manually updating through Windows Updates, you may no longer be able to print or scan using the USB and Network connections. To resolve this issue, you will need to uninstall the existing Brother software and then reinstall it."

Just installed the anniversary update. All seemed to go well. But every time I connect my Kindle to a USB port...

ETA: More oddities. On first launch calibre created a new metadata.db file. I needed to restore the original one to get my library back. Also calibre became the default application for handling zip files. Not happy.

ETA2: Other USB devices seem to work properly. Only the Kindle causes a crash.

ETA3: Was able to access the Kindle by rebooting with it already connected.

I just did a google search for information about this issue during the past week and I wasn't able to find anything but I did find a forum thread, I forget which forum it was on, about problems using the Kindle App and either the Nook or Kobo app, I forget which. Anyway they then resoloved the problems by logging those apps out and then logging back in.

If there are other issues in the past week Google didn't find them.

Yes, but did all models and firmware versions get tested? Probably not. MS would only test what they considered important. And for other devices, it needed someone with the device to be running the previews, report the problem and then MS to decide to fix. There is one report here of an iPhone 5s not working with this release, so that suggests MS missed something.

Is anyone here successfully using an iPhone or iPad with Anniversary Edition? If so, which models?

Multiple reports implies it must be something Kobo-specific, though I cannot imagine how MS would mess something like that up.
But, the evidence is that MS have messed it up. The Kobo devices are not working with the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. Why, I don't know. But, as Kobo have not released a firmware update since January, it must be something MS have changed.

In other words, as usual JSWolf has gotten something partially correct, and blown it all out of proportion.

Perhaps, on par with his usual observed anti-Kindle partisan tendencies, he is trying (consciously or subconsciously) to create a local mindset that Kindles have this problem, in order to counter the upcoming bad press for Kobo products if this doesn't get fixed really soon?

I can't think of another logical explanation for why he is specifically calling out the Kindle despite the problem reports specifically calling out the Kobo.
Yes, Jon should not have included Kindles in his list if he didn't have any evidence. But there are reports of for non-Kobo devices not working, so giving a warning to others is a reasonable thing to do.

Hmmm.... did you check in the Kobo ereader forum? As for the thread in Calibre/Devices, I seem to remember that more than one person posted about having issues.

As for other sources, the Windows Insider feedback hub had quite a few posts about issues with Kobo ereaders the last 8 or so preview builds prior to the Anniversary version general release. Though they never did receive the number of upvotes a demand for a Pokemon Go app did.

Given that I found this behaviour on 3 VMs and 4 physical computers (2 Intel chipset, 2 AMD chipset) with a mix of Windows 10 x64 and X86 installs of the later preview builds and the Anniversary release build, I'm quite confident that the issue is going to cause quite a few people problems.

I'm not denying that there's apparently a widespread problem with Kobo devices, David. My objection is the claim that many different brands of reader are affected; there seems little or no evidence to justify that claim. But time will tell. I'm sure that manufacturers will be quick to issue revised drivers if this is where the problem lies, but it's disappointing that they didn't do so during beta testing.

My ancient iPhone 4 works fine. I had to reboot the computer, though, and wait for Windows to re-install two iPhone drivers.
I also had to tap Trust once to confirm that I trust this computer, but that was it.

My Kindle PW2 also connects fine.

After uninstalling the 32bit version of iTunes from my laptop (labelled as "iTunes 12.4.3 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards)") and then installing the Windows x64 version of iTunes, my iPad (gen 4) and iPhone 5S are now working. Unfortunately, the iPhone Configuration Utility no longer works which is why I was running that version to get the 32 bit drivers that IPCU needed. Sadly it's replacement (Apple Configurator) only runs on real Mac hardware since it gets down and dirty with the hardware.

Thanks, Doitsu, that's useful to know. Loading new drivers is something that seems to happen with most iPhone firmware update or new version of iTunes, so not too surprising that a Windows update should also trigger it.

Thanks, David. iTunes is one of my most-used programs, so good to hear it's working OK.

Well, Jon didn't actually claim that "many different brands of reader" were affected. His claim is that many USB devices are affected. He didn't seem to be restricting this to ereaders until he mentioned Kobo and Kindle. And the reports here for devices not working included a camera and a GPS device (though they were against the preview, so I don't know if they have been fixed).

The problem for Kobo is that there is no device driver to release. They are mounted as a USBMS device using the drivers supplied as part of the OS. It might be fixable via a firmware update. That could make the device present itself in a different way that is acceptable to Windows - including old versions. But for anyone who doesn't have WiFi, they will have to find a non-updated PC to do the install.
