For some books I transfer via USB, I am able to upload to Calibre but other books I am unable. It transfers from the kindle as a Text file. Any suggestions?

Amazon has been monkeying around with eBook formats on the Kindle. So if you pull off an eBook from your Kindle, you cannot be sure you;ll actully get a usable eBook. So best not to do that.

They certainly haven't removed it on Amazon UK. Go to "Manage My Content and Devices", click the "..." button alongside a book and there's an option "Download and Transfer Via USB". Are you not seeing this?

No problem - I don't think anyone mentioned that it's not something you do when you buy the book; you first buy the book and then select it for download from the "Manage Your Content" page. It's not obvious

Just to confirm, using this option will still download ebooks in the .azw or .azw3 format, right?

I also remember always seeing the option directly from the buy page. I can't imagine why they would choose to make it US-only though...
