I actually prefer the 24 hr clock (or "military time" as it seems to be known here in the USA.) It's just easier - if someone says they arrived somewhere at 11:00, here in the USA you have to ask them was that AM or PM? If everyone used the 24 hr clock, you would know that 1100 was a morning time while 2300 meant they got there at night! (I run into this all the time as a AAA dispatcher, so it is a bit of a pet peeve for me.

I'm surprised that Europe has apparently replaced all the analog clocks with digital. Poor Big Ben.
Now I understand what Douglas Adams was ranting about regarding digital watches in Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. No wonder he became so depressed in his later works. |

Let's look at order of hours in 12-h time notation: ... 10 A.M. 11 A.M. 12 P.M. 1 P.M ... 10 P.M. 11 P.M. 12 A.M. 1 A.M. ... I don't want to start a flame war: which notation is better, but I want to point out that besides math you have to remember 2 special cases! I've finished math studies but I feel uncomfortable that i have to do simple math and check 2 special cases every time I'm checking time on my Kindle. |

Set the language in setting to 'English (United Kingdom)', the time will show in 24hour.

As an American, I'd love the option for 24 hr and 12 hr. I work with both formats often and can see the benefit of both (and even bigger benefit to just using 24 hr period).
As for watches, one could easily put two sets of numbers at each mark so that you don't have to change from a 12 hr watch in terms of analog. I doubt most people would be confused over whether it is 0100 or 1300 or any other time any more than they would be confused knowing whether it is 1am or 1pm. |

When modern Analog clocks were first being designed it was found that designing the gearing system to chime 24 times (ala clock towers) would be far to complex which is how the 12 hr clock face got so popular. Of course that isn't the case I'm sure with clocks on computers etc. since they don't use physical gears, but I imagine even most computers use a 12 hr clock because as human beings we tend to be used to a 12 hr day even now. I mean til the advent of modern lighting most people got up and went to bed with the sun. While the modern world may run 24/7 human beings still haven't managed to catch up to that. lol.

Most computers don't use a 12h clock; it really is almost exclusively a US phenomenon to use the 12h clock for everything. If you look at a computer in pretty much any other country, you'll see a 24h clock.
