can a Kindle tell the time ?
the thread about synching across multiple Kindle devices caused me to ponder this.
does a Kindle add date & timestamps to its files a) when downloaded wirelessly, b) when transferred via USB. does it "know" the time only when wireless is enabled or does it have an internal clock that keeps time so long as battery does not go flat. ( my K3 only dispays date & time on menu screen if Wireless is on ) this maybe becomes when relevant if auto-synching 2 devices as software needs to determine which of 2 files of meta data is the more "recent" |

The Kindle does know the time if wireless is disabled. But, it does need to sync that time occasionally (either through 3G or Wifi) to keep things running smoothly. If the Kindle's time gets out of whack, for instance, the 'Sort by Last Read' feature can be affected.

Yes, the Kindle has a real-time clock, and correctly time-stamps files (provided that the clock is set correctly, of course).

DATE command
If you type "date" in the Kindle WiFi at the opening screen, it does retrieve the current date and time regardless of your date setting in the Settings menu.
The information for the "date" command comes from your syncing with the Amazon servers. |

It can be somewhat difficult to get the pacing just right, but if you create a txt document like follows and add it to the kindle, the voiceover function should be able to tell you the time.
The time is twelve o'clock P M. The time is twelve o'clock and five seconds, P M. The time is twelve o'clock and ten seconds, P M. The time is twelve o'clock and fifteen seconds, P M. The time is twelve o'clock and twenty seconds, P M. And so on. |
