Amazon today announced that the Kindle will be the exclusive e-book smiley on MobileRead. In related news, JSWolf had an aneurysm.

Got this in my email today - the third paragraph is particularly intersting...
New on Tor.com, Tuesday morning, August 26: “Shade,” an original “Jumper” story by Steven Gould. Before it was a big-budget movie with a somewhat (cough, cough) rearranged storyline, Jumper (1992) was a superb SF novel about a teenager who’s the only person in the world who can teleport...and who, being a teenager, uses this power to (1) get away from his terrible father, (2) steal cool stuff, and (3) get girls. It was a grabby, compelling read, and its sequel Reflex (2004) was just as much fun. Now Gould tells a story set after both novels—a story canonical with the novels, not with the alternate vision of the movie. Illustrated by Eric Fortune, it’s a knockout. In the coming days we’ll be announcing other new original material on Tor.com, including more original fiction and art and new e-book giveaways. Some of these offerings will be available only to people who register on the site itself, so if you haven’t done so already, consider signing up right now. It takes only a couple of minutes and it’s entirely free. Meanwhile, check out “Shade,“ by Steven Gould, on Tor.com. |

In other news, small-scale flamewars have broken out in forums connected with several publishing houses. Hey, you encouraged them. I wonder if it would help if we started up live picketing for ebooks.
*envisions enraged mobile readers standing outside all the major publishing houses demanding ebook editions* |

Couldn't we have the protest on Second Life instead? Seems more appropriate, somehow.
![]() What would be very helpful is if some of this round of free ebooks from Tor are sequels to some of the last round. Not all of them, of course, and I know some people will complain that they missed the first round, but still, it would help the particular issues folk seemed to be complaining about. ![]() |

I would have thought that nowadays in ebook format this problem would go away being so cheap to get the book online. Our tastes must be strange compared to the publishers people. Or the author didnt get past the thousand sale mark and no longer worth the effort. I can only suggest that you get in touch with the author, offer money for electronic copy direct from them, and hope that they dont have a contract that forbids them to deal direct with you. |

I only mentioned offering them in this round of free books because apparently Tor isn't ready to sell them yet, and won't be for 6-12 months.
![]() All this reminds me of a scene in Doctorow's Someone Comes To Town, Someone Leaves Town (regarding internet access cards....) |
