My understanding is that there is an association between Tor and tor.com, but that tor.com is not a sales vehicle for Tor. I reckon tor.com is probably best thought of as a long-term sponsorship venture for an online community, much like corporate funding of a sports stadium or a tennis tournament. But you can't buy a Monster Cable subscription at the stadium formerly known as Candlestick Park, for instance.

However, Torie's name is a coincidence, plain and simple. Sometimes things like that really do happen.
Just a small correction. It was my post that you took exception with so vent your anger towards me instead of Slayda. To the best of my knowledge he's a gentleman and a scholar. I on the other hand.... well evidence to the contrary.

I wasn't trying to poke a stick at you. Taylor was attempting to lighten the mood of the thread and I was just playing along. I've failed before and I'll fail again.

Welcome and I hope you have a look around. Lots of good information here.

Hi all. Just a quick note to de-lurk myself and let you all know I'm around. I'm one of those people at Tor who is very interested in eBooks, as I'm also an eBook reader. Most editors are, too, if nothing else so that they don't have to lug around reams of manuscript (there are many of us, especially at Tor, where everyone is very much into tech and such. corporate politics makes for slow-moving machinery, though, and that's about as much as I can comfortably say about that).

Anyway, I've been looking around the MR forums for info on best practices and user experiences (and recommendations for a device. Like evilrooster, I'm also between devices, so I read PDFs on my MacBook right now). If you have anything, feel free to post some links to threads (don't go OT though—just links. I don't want to hijack the thread!). Thanks all!

Welcome, pablo. Glad you can join us! I don't have any specific links to offer at this time. Just wanted to make sure you get a warm welcome, even in a thread who's title has to be a little off-putting for someone from Tor.

Please remember, even though we're sometimes rather over the top , it's because we're passionate about books (and especially ebooks)!

Yeah, we really frown on thread hijacking here. :emotifaction:

I mean, c'mon... someone who recognizes the inherently evil nature of barnyard animals who is into bookbinding and e-books MUST STAY.

Likewise someone who blogs on tor.com about drm-infested music files and, to paraphrase, what situations might allow for ethical piracy.

So to summarize:

1. [shatner]tor...TOR....TOR!!!![/shatner]
2. It's a blog, dude. Give it a rest.
3. Roosters are evil
4. DRM = roosters
5. Hijack This Thread

Tor should put its mind at rest about the threat not to buy. My experience with people leads me to believe that just as has occurred in the past, once the books are available, people will forget the threat they made in the "heat of battle" about not buying. Besides, it is hard to keep good quality writing down, especially in a world of mediocrity.

You can always come to MobileRead for advice, just be sure to wear a thick coat because there are always passionate opinions about what makes a device the "best of both worlds" or which device is better. The nice thing about Mobile Read is that although discussions are passionate, they rarely stray far from civility.

Pablo, as an editor, I would think (I say with a great deal of ignorance) that you would want an ebook reader that allowed you to at least highlight and bookmark problem areas and possibly to correct them at the time. I know that when I scan & OCR one of my favorite pbooks so I have an ebook version, I tend to do my final proof read on my palm PDA for that reason. It does not have any ability to correct but with the highlight & bookmark I can more quickly make corrections on my computer.

Reason, I'm saying all this is, if you should find an eink display device that will allow the highlight (many already allow bookmarks), I would be very interested in that device.

Oh, & welcome to the forum.

Oh, & welcome to the forum.
The iLiad allows highlighting, as well as other kinds of markup. There are community-created applications that can extract segments of PDF files that have been marked up, as well.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. These are all great suggestions.

Slayda, lack of markup is why many editors still carry dead trees, although some have been moving to UMPCs such as the eeePC for portability and editability.

For those who want to be "screwed" again, here's a blurb out of today's newsletter:

Quote:
In the coming days we’ll be announcing other new original material on Tor.com, including more original fiction and art and new e-book giveaways. Some of these offerings will be available only to people who register on the site itself, so if you haven’t done so already, consider signing up right now. It takes only a couple of minutes and it’s entirely free.

For a site that isn't about e-books, they sure are milking the e-book giveaway angle. It's just bizarre, to me.

Barcey,

I must say that I am shocked! Shocked! that anyone could come off wrong on the Internet. Who would have thought such a thing?

(My better half was asleep when I got to bed last night. So this morning we were talking. "Why did you go to bed so late?" he asked. "Someone was WRONG on the Internet," I replied. He rolled his eyes. "No, really," I insisted. "And the worst thing was, it was me!")

Yeah, I got the email about more free ebooks coming, too. Kind of oddly schizophrenic, but the short story being referenced ("Shade") was quite good.

Taylor514ce,

Do we have to go there again?

Surely tor.com can give away a few eBooks without making it their raison d'etre. They're posting short stories onsite as well (I think I'm going to have to read some more Steven Gould now), and it sounds like there will be some art to download, if that's your thing.

If they're not books you want to read, don't read them. As I said before, I suspect Tor have got the message that more eBooks are good. So more are forthcoming.

Peripheral question: why on earth does this forum have smilies like and ? Could you not agree on which reader to depict ?

This forum has a history of Smiley Campaigns. I, however, Sir Adrian (Bruce) Rappaport, Official Consort to the Queen, am the clear winner.
