Quit reading all the threads.
Did you follow all the jail break instructions in the correct threaf?
If so you will keep your jailbreak but will have to reinstall any hacks when you update.

It is that simple.

I jb'ed using 1.11N. I ask because I performed the procedure way before 5.7.x was out and I worry that it isn't updated enough to carry over the update. Will I be fine just applying the bridge here then? Not hotfix needed or anything?

The jailbreak will be fine.
You will need to reinstall any hacks.

Again. Apply EITHER the bridge OR the hotfix, then update to whatever you want.

As with all firmware updates, hacks will need to be reinstalled, but the jailbreak itself will be preserved, and the latest jailbreak release bundles contain the necessary MKK/;log/gandalf additional resources.

I have a SN#905A, which is a SN found on the wiki, and is indeed PW2, 6th gen, purchased in japan, using it in japan, registered to usa amazon account.

I made it pretty far! I have KUAL and MRPI working. But the only "hack" that i've got to work is DRAW, which i dragged to extensions.

The only hack I'm interested in is the screensaver, linkss.

i put the bin in mrinstaller. it gets found. i hush, as a little baby, its done quick as a flash and indicates its deleting something (the bin apparently). i hit the hw switch to turn off. i still see pencils. no new folders in dev or docs. i restart. i still see pens.
I've tried it many times. same results. i have reset the device and rooted all over again. same results.

i bought it with special offers activated. i have never seen one special offer. i went into amazon settings and turned off special offers. it didn't charge me anything.

i tried to install python and koreader and usbnet, just to try. the latter 2 appear in kual menu but don't seem to work. the messages during install indicated 100% completion, but at the end there was failure (for both) to mount root something something.

so, im all ears.
I'm giving up unless i hear of a case of a 905A successfully running screensaver.

Have you had the device connected to the internet so that the change in status can be updated on the device?

i can't be certain. it's connected now. i'll leave it overnight and try tomorrow. what should the bottom screen install messages look like for ss? is there a progress procession? does it end with a positive note?

There should be a sample screen saver shown at the end of a successful install.

Check through your settings and the menu contained within the settings -
(home -> menu -> settings -> menu)

Some firmware versions have a selection with the word: "sync" (an abbreviation for synchronize) contained in it.
Not all firmware versions are the same and I don't have any idea what it looks like in the Japanese GUI.

Your device info panel on the Kindle should include the "Special Offers" status.

And you didn't mention what firmware version you are running, so we can't really say what you should look for.

@gnormal: PM me your MRPI log (extensions/MRInstaller/log/mrinstaller.log), you seem to have hit multiple weird (and fatal) installation failures, if I deciphered your post properly.

Does the downgrade "update_PW2_5.4.3.2_initial.bin" works for pw2j, the Japan version? Is there any hardware different between the 2 model?

That is the one which works on both the 2Gbyte and the 4Gbyte PW-2 models.
(The 4Gbyte PW-2 was first introduced in Japan, but is now widespread.)

Yeah, it's from a 4GB WiFi version, which was introduced to the world much later than the original 4GB Japanese one, so it *should* do the trick

.

(That 4GB vs. 2GB thing was the extent of the original differences, as far as we know. And a 4GB variant replaced the original 2GB one in every other country later on, as @knc1 said).

it worked this time. maybe as pdurrant suggested, my device had not yet been notified that i removed the special offers.

today when i first tried, the kindle usb storage would not show up in my mac. i noticed i had not registered the device. once i did that, it did show up as storage. it also showed me a letter that said, "dear developer, this device is no longer registered for testing..." etc. afterward things went smoothly, the screensaver is working, and i upgraded back to 5.8.1. at that point i had to reinstall screensaver again.

but oddly, even if i forgot to register it before, it was showing up as storage.

anyway, happy ending. so i guess japanese model is fine. (I'm using the english interface.)

Every time you change the registration status, you should re-install the 'hotfix'.

There are exceptions to the above advice, but the above is the simplest way to describe what needs to be done and the safest.
(Installing the 'hotfix' will also re-boot the device - which is required to trigger the bridge code.)
