Butter? Butter??
I drizzle dipping oil on my toast. American born and raised, and somehow picked up the European style of handling a knife and fork back in high school. It just makes more sense. I've also spent most of my life explaining to people that, no, I'm not left handed. That's actually great fun. They then ask why I use my fork left handed, so I tell them to show me how they cut their meat. They, of course, then pick up the knife with their right hand and the fork with their left. "See! You do it the same way I do." "But...But...But..." |

I don't usually butter my toast. It makes the jam fall off.

Doesn't anyone else lightly toast their bread laying flat in a toaster oven, spread the butter, then put the bread back into the oven to let it bake into the bread? It gives a nice golden brown color, with butter saturated deeply into the bread. (Use thick sliced bread for this.) Like making garlic bread but without the garlic and herbs. Delicious! The only down side to this is that you only get to do it for a few years before your arteries are so plaqued up that you can't bend your arms!
And for those that worry about greasy fingers... Hey, the butter is supposed to run down your forearms while you're eating! Stitchawl |

I used to make my mom fix what we called "soft toast". In other words, you butter the bread and run it under the broiler til the butter is melted but the bread isn't exactly toasted, we didn't leave it in there that long. (Kind of like what Stitchawl describes above).
Now I butter my toast when it's still hot so the butter melts...but don't usually end up with greasy fingers. |

I like mine out of the toaster, buttered then put it back in the toaster for a few seconds, I've gone through a few toasters doing that so I bought a toaster oven . Now I toast to my hearts content.

Just caught up with this thread, and have finally stopped laughing (I'm sure nothing's permanently strained), so:
- knife in right hand, fork in left hand (use tea spoon for the peas & gravy); - checked my packet of "Flora Original" - margerine by any other name, but it defiantly avoids the use of the words "spread" and "margerine"; - toast rack: item designed to let toast go cold, traditionally given in bulk as a wedding present, and then re-cycled into church bazaars and letter racks; - toast is placed under grill, toasted both sides, buttered on last side to be toasted, spread with orange & ginger marmalade & eaten whilst still hot. With practice, a production line can be set up so that as one slice is finished, the next slice is ready to be eaten. Damage to the local environment can be minimised by (a) doing this nude (carefully!), (b) locating everything so it can be reached from the shower; - hotel toast is the pits; forget even trying to eat it, just nick the micro pots of marmalade and have a toast-fest when back at home; - we had smooth Sun-Pat peanut butter in the 50's in UK - it needed to be stirred first as there was usually a Torrey Canyon/Exxon Valdez event on the top; - grilling your toast is most fun way to check if the smoke alarm is still working - provided it doesn't actually catch fire you can scrape the burnt bits off with a knife - forgot to mention, toast should be al dente, with friable innards, thereby avoiding the shrapnel effect when bitten into Last edited by alecE; 07-05-2009 at 10:47 AM. Reason: forgot this! |
