I used Whispersync only for a couple of years after getting my first ereader (Kindle), then I switched to sideloading via USB. That was long before I bought my first non-Kindle ereader. I just never felt I needed Whispersync so much as to bother with emailing, wifi and syncing. I could find my place in a book without it perfectly well.

I'm not interested in either public domain or paper books and so 90% of all my ebooks are bought. Mostly from Amazon, Kobo and Google Play, some older ones from Smashwords as well. Still, I sideload all of them from Calibre, without any exceptions.

Whispersync is why I got a Kindle in the first place. I read from multiple devices throughout the day--yesterday I started out reading on my Oasis 3, then went to my phone, then finished on my PW5. Never had an issue finding my place - it was seamless.

Even if I didn't read on multiple devices, though, the ability to wirelessly send books to my device would be worth it. I was sending books wirelessly from day one, to my original white Kindle in 2008...it's what drew me to the device in the first place. I have no interest in returning to a device that requires me to be tethered to any type of cable for transferring books.

You can send books to the Kobo Sage via Dropbox, wirelessly. No syncing, though.

Not me, if I go out, an ereader goes with me. Usually my Forma, but it can be the Oasis 2, just depends.

And to the Forma! I love the Kobo Dropbox integration SO MUCH!

But yeah, there's no sync. I'm not a highlighter or note taker (except when proofreading), so I don't miss sync.

Is it only available on that model? What about the other ones?

It's not officially available, but it should be possible to enable it on other Kobo readers. Look at this thread:

Well, I've had a paid account for years. Fits my library and many other things besides. Still, I rarely bother to use Dropbox on my Kobos.

Edit: as I recall, you have to use a specific folder in Dropbox to get your books to your Kobo. The Calibre library folder won't do it.

Mustn't forget to mention that placing a calibre library on any network attached storage is not a good idea. The question is not if your library will be corrupted but when it will be corrupted.

A favourite opening line in many complaints in the calibre forum has been "I've had my library on <fill in the network storage of your choice> for years and now my library is corrupted/inaccessible/borked."

Is there a way to send Calibre metadata?

I don't know, actually, as I've used the Dropbox option very little. I guess if you embed the metadata, it should carry over. But I'm not sure.
