Not odd at all. The PW's light diffuser inevitably has some impact. It all depends whether you do most of your reading in good light (in which case you'd be better off with the Basic) or poor light (where the PW's frontlight will make it a clear winner).

Well Amazon lab wanted my first basic, and I had to ship it to over there for them to test instead of do a simple return! Looks like they're investigating.

So this pixilation, is this normal? Or should I exchange it?

The degree of clarity/pixilation seems to vary from book to book.
I've also noticed that some books don't give you an option to change fonts. |

It won't get any better - limitation of the resolution. You will either get used to it after a while, or you will need higher resolution. Depending what you used just before looking at the screen will make it more or less obvious. Spend a while reading on a high res screen, and the low res one will look even worse. Even the PW while looking better concerning smoothness of edges still looks very pixilated when comparing it side by side to higher res screens (300+ ppi). On the PW the smallest size fonts don't look ideal - sharting from about 3rd smallest it looks okay. From previews the Voyage is said to be nice and sharp looking even at smallest font size. Those 300ppi appear to corrolate across all screentypes (eink, lcd, oled) to be the good resolution to be called high - as in perfectly capable to display sharp tiny text.
That is not to say that there is no more improvement past 300 ppi - there is, but a lot less subtle. On eink there might not even be any improvement - the current eink is only rated to support up to 300ppi. |

I currently have a Paper White model one and I might be interested if the kindle gives me an upgrade over what I have now. What matters to me is the size and weight of the reader, I do not feel that the screen resolution maked that much difference to me since this is purely text that is being displayed and does not need super high resolution. I do ocasionally read in the dark, however that is rare. It's rare enough that I would conder the basic kindle if it offers some advances in size and weight over the paper white model one. As stated in other threads my paper white model one is doing ok, however it is having some issues here and there, enough so that I would consider an upgrade.
Now for a statement of my own personality, I really hate to be with out a few books to occupy my time when I commute to and from the office or going other places. The last time I had a kindle break down on me that was my older Kindle three where the on/off switch stopped working and I could no longer turn it on. It took me two weeks when I could not access my kindle library and I really hated that, I think that it would pay for me to have a secondary kindle in case the first one, the paper white, breaks down so I can keep reading while I replace the paper white. I would like one of the two to be a paper white since I do read in dark rooms on ocasion, I do not think that the voyage gives me enough value to compensate me for the extra dollars that would be needed for it. The basic could cover 75% of my reading environments so its a consideration for me. |

I really don't see the point. You can buy popular reading devices at any supermarket these days, so having an extra one "just in case" your first one breaks seems rather unnecessary.

That the picture has been altered to enhance/boost contrast (to make the Kindle screen look better), you can see it in the histogram/levels/curves if you know how to "read" it (see the attached picture in my first post).
Trust me on this one. Edit: Realistic contrast in the pic blow. ![]() Last edited by B.F.; 10-10-2014 at 08:12 PM. |

Humor me and put up both histograms side by side for the "fake" and your "realistic" picture. |
