Hello all. So I just got my New Basic Kindle and I have to say, it's no different than my kindle keyboard. Also the text is fuzzy. Maybe I got a bad one?? Bummed

It's the same screen as your Kindle Keyboard, but it should be an awful lot faster. Plus, of course, the touch screen makes things like looking up words in the dictionary much faster. The screen certainly shouldn't be "fuzzy" - can you post a photograph of it?

Thank you for responding. Yes I can see the increase in speed and the touch screen is very convenient! I will try to post a pic when I get home.

Not fuzzy, pixelated. It uses a thinner, sharper font rendering than the Kindle 3 or 4. But it doesn't have the resolution to support it so if you look too hard at lower font sizes you can see that the letters looks slightly blocky. That is what you're talking about right?

Just thought I'd share a few thoughts and a pic of the screen on my new KT2/K7/KBT (what are we calling it??).
I love the touch screen. I was worried that it would be awkward for me - when I read in bed I lie on my side and could handle the K4NT with one hand. So far I've had no problems. The touch screen is very responsive, but I have yet to accidentally change pages or anything. Coming from the K4NT to this has been amazing in two short days. I adore not having to scroll down to a word to check the definition. Goodreads integration is wonderful. Everything seems faster and page turns are smoother. I haven't noticed ghosting yet, and have the page refresh off. The slightly larger size hasn't been a problem. The larger edge around the screen has been nice, for it gives a good resting spot for my thumb while reading, ditto for the larger area at the bottom. Also, the lack of buttons at the bottom is great, as my clumsy fingers would frequently bring up the menu or go home on my old one. One thing I'm not crazy about is the back. It's a bit slippier than the matte, rubbery backing of the K4NT, so I've had to be a bit more careful. I keep my Kindles naked usually, but if this becomes a problem I may end up getting a cover. I don't have a comparison with my K4NT (the buttons died and it's stuck on the home screen, hence my getting the new one. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried.). Also, Amazon customer service was wonderful and offered me a discounted upgrade to a PW. They said the offer would stand for a while and I may take advantage closer to Christmas - My mother (bless her!) purchased this one for me before I could discuss purchasing the PW with my husband. Anyway, here's a photo of my new baby, taken just a few moments ago in ambient light with my phone. |

I have been thinking of getting a basic kindle. I do not think that I need a very high screen resolution and I do read in dim envionrments, however that is rare and I would like ot have something as a back up for my paper white.

Apparently there is a quality control problem with the basic Kindle. My local Best Buy is already seeing returns. I got to see some of the units, some have brown screens, some have gray. Some were cloudy looking.
Amazon will just have to work out the problems, like they have with other releases. |

The only thing I could think of was moisture or actual screen damage. I was surprised to see those units. Maybe the units didn't get sealed properly?

I didn't see any returned Paperwhites.
Almost every company has production problems with the first run of items. Amazon has always taken care of it and replaced bad units. |

So the replacement Kindle basic arrived... and it has a better screen. The background is slightly whiter, and the font is significantly blacker. It also has blacker font than the PW2 and looks about the same as the k4black.
So yeah it's just the usual deal with variation in screens. I'll be sending the old one back to amazon. |
