Yes, I say it's about time they stopped download & transfer for borrowed books. I think even the original Kindle came with mobile connectivity.

Didn't they cut off the oldest Kindles a little while back?

Yes, I believe you're right. That they shut off the free 3G or whatever it was. They also don't allow the old non-touch devices to use the on device store anymore. I never shop on my ereaders anyway.
eta: ok, maybe it was just the on device store that was shut off...don't have anything that old myself. Last edited by lkmiller; 03-01-2023 at 05:29 PM. |

Yeah, I would think a large amount of occassional ebook buyers reading on phones/tablets would add up to more ebooks overall than the small amount of ereader users who buy more ebooks individually.

Really, I'm surprised they offer download and transfer at all. All Kindles that are not cut off already have WiFi. Don't get me wrong, it's helpful to those that strip DRM. But it seems it would make more sense for Amazon to cut that off.

The later non-touch Kindles can no longer access the store, but can still connect to WiFi and download books purchased on other devices. |

I also suspect that is the case. However, Amazon no doubt does know and I presume is taking this into account in its decisions. I was aksi unterested un an earkuer post which referred to Amazon having an option to choose DRM as a reason for return. I think Amazon is closely monitoring what happens. It no doubt hopes that it can keep both those who do care about DRM and those who don't, and may be hoping that the present situation will allow them to mostly do so.

Yeah, it seems like it's mostly a courtesy at this point. These days if you can download to a computer, you can probably download directly to the Kindle.
