ETA: it's only got about 10 books on it now and about 2 GB of available storage so the drive must have gone bad at some point. I only use it for downloading books in azw2 format to my laptop though so I don't care.
There is no AZW2 format. The correct name is KF8.

I hope your KK keeps working well enough to allow downloads.

Although people have been very critical of Amazon on this thread, not without good reason, it is difficult to argue convincingly against what it has done. The development of the tools reached the point where it threatened what I suspect is an excellent revenue stream for Amazon in textbook rentals and sales. And as little as I like DRM that cannot be circumvented, the fact is that it is hardly unreasonable for Amazon to seek to prevent copying of KU and library books. I cannot predict what Amazon is going to do tommorow, let alone further in the future. But Amazon is data driven and collects plentiful information about the use of its infrastructure. Whilst I suspect that those who care about DRM are far too few to have any real impact on Amazon sales, I simply don't know. But I'd say Amazon does. And Amazon, despite having the means to block the availablity of KF8 and the functionality of old versions of K4PC, has for the time being chosen not to do so. It is at least possible that they don't hqve current plans to do so.

I don't think there is much certainty in relation to future DRM circumvention in relation to any vendor. Kobo is certainly a better choice at the moment for most tradpub. Where it does fall down is KU. Amazon has a far bigger catalog of self-oublished and Indie e-books. And at least so far drm circumvention is easy with Kobo. I have old Kindle's and have no difficulties with drm removal at the moment. When I do I will look for other options.
Amazon is going to lose some sales of eBooks published in 2023+ from people without a Kindle to register to their account. And some are going to cancel KU.

Yes, but have you seen how many people in this thread have just gone "I ordered a new Kindle"?

I already had a PW3 (inherited) and I've managed to get a Kindle Touch (not being used). So I'm pretty well set without any money spent.

Hardly any, because a majority read on phone & tablet apps.
Then the majority of eink users buying from Amazon use a Kindle.

So Amazon may lose a few sales of KU subscriptions or Kindle ebooks to a niche group of eink users. Probably they won't notice in the usual overall churn.

It's a bit weird they ever allowed PC downloads for eInk Kindle of borrowed books in the last few years; I guess maybe for institutional users that didn't allow wifi for the Kindle users. Kindles with no WiFi or Mobile are very ancient?

Isn't that something to be celebrated? Cutting down on KU downloads only benefits the authors; Amazon gets its money upfront. It's a question of how the pot is divided, but Amazon's share is a constant. So this is a hit Amazon is willing to take. Although like most here, I don't think lost KU subscriptions will be significant.

Hah! I went over to the dark side myself (I'm kidding) when I got an offer I couldn't refuse, indirectly through the good graces of a member here. This was last summer and the point for me is that I'd already stopped downloading, stripping and transferring almost all of the time, as too much of a nuisance -- but it meant I had to read my untransferred Kindle books on a tablet. Which was not the end of the world, but this is much better.

There are advantages to a new device anyway and there are no guarantees that an old device will continue to perform the desired functions.

I am happier reading in their android app now that Amazon have removed the risk of accidentally 1 accidental tap buying the matching audiobook.or the next in series....

In fact you can't buy anything now via the app which suits me fine.

But the chances of finding anything worth reading in prime reading have not gone up at all.

Yeah, I was given a pretty beat-up Kindle myself. This just happened, but I've already started buying from Kobo and will continue to do so.

Mainly it's interesting to check out how the firmware compares to my Kobos and Nooks.

Are there any numbers for ebooks read on phones vs tablets vs eink?

I ask, because personally I wouldn't care to do any longer reading on my phone.

And since today Download to PC (for purchased ebooks) is no longer possible. Only to Kindle. Anyone else with this problem?

Also can you name a specific book? Some books are only available in KFX format and so cannot be downloaded using Download & Transfer via USB.
