They stake out a high visibility event. There they try to enrage/offend as many people as possible, as much as possible in hope that some of them will get attacked. When somebody loses the temper WBC sues the attacker, the event organiser, the police force in town, the town, the county, the manufacturer of weapon they were attacked with, anybody ... The vast majority of the "church" members are from a single extended family. Their "spiritual leader" is a personal injury lawyer that got disbarred. So. Do not get angry, because if you do they are wining. |

Agree 100%. One of my favorite pictures from a counter protest against WBC:

My favorite part of the WBC's planned protest of Mr. Jobs' funeral is that they tweeted their plan... from an iPhone.

I was very sadden by Steve Jobs passing. I didn't know him and aside from just being human and thinking it is sad when anyone dies to young, I stopped to analyze why his passing was so sad to me.
Then it came to me. I realized that he had given me something I had lost a long time ago. That excitement I use to have when I woke up on Christmas morning to find some must have toy I wanted. The iPhone is the first product that made me go ''Wow'' when I saw the commercials for it back in 2007. I swear my eyes lit up like a christmas tree and I had to have it. I hadn't had that feeling since I was a little girl. I realized to that with his yearly updates on products, it was like christmas, waiting for the next cycle to see what that mind of his would come up with next. I've since bought the iPad and the MacBook Air and I love them all. I didn't buy something from Apple every year, but I still looked forward to seeing what was next, even if it was just a refresh. Then I realized, part of the reason I was sad was because it was like being told there was no Santa Claus, and that the magic of christmas was now lost. I have to thank Mr. Jobs for giving me back some of my child hood excitement again. I don't know what will happen with Apple long term, but I know no one can replace how he sold us on his products. Rest in peace Mr. Jobs. You earned it. |

I know this won't be popular, but what did Apple actually invent? Most of what Apple did was retool existing products. MP3 players existed before the iPod. Xerox had a GUI with mouse before Apple. Tablets existed before iPad. Smartphones existed before iPhones. Really, most of what Jobs did was steal tech from others and do it how he wanted it done.

And prices rose higher then they should have. Take the iPod classic for example. The audio components inside are cheap. And Apple charges a premium price. It's obvious when you listen with at least decent headphone that the sound is not all that good.

For example, the first Apple mouse-driven computer was the Lisa. Jobs had been kicked off the Lisa team and lost any control of the direction. As a result, the Lisa came out priced for corporate printing departments. Jobs, joined/kick-started the separate Mac efforts. He insisted on developing a product that was simple and priced for consumers. It had a 9-inch black and white screen, not because he thought that was best, but because it was needed for his target market. He kept the Mac hardware as an apple only exclusive because it allowed him to keep control of the complete experience and keep a seamless interface. The mp3 player was around long before the iPod. However, it required you to find your music and/or rip it. Of course, those on this forum have no problem with that, but the integration with iTunes made it easy for the masses. There were smartphones before the iPhone. But Apple put it all together. Phone, email, mp3, camera (eventually), with a reasonable battery life. All with a software platform that allowed for expansion/apps. I know you can take exception with any of these statements. And as I said, in most cases, the choices made aren't right for me. However, I believe he brought two general principles: fully integrated systems, and a laser-focus on his market to the extent that he was willing to exclude features to meet his needs. In fact, many of the 'shortcomings' of the iPad is because he felt that a long battery life was more important than other factors. |

What he did, or better yet, what Apple did (on some products) was make it popular and better. Not because it exists before, was good enough for people to buy or enjoy. Take for example the Walkman. Sony had total control over the market then, but failed to innovate and move it forward. So ... Walkmans just died (please, let's not start arguing about it because I won't turn this post into a Sony vs Apple war, I won't reply anyway) Yeah, he did it the way he wanted maybe, but you did not, I did not, he had the vision to do it and the arguments to convince others to deploy and produce. It failed in some, it succed on most. The proof of that is the popularity of Apple today and the value of it's market stock price, today. Man ... you know what? I started to believe that you just like controversy and post that kind of stuff to make people mad or uncomfortable, honestly. Last edited by jocampo; 10-08-2011 at 12:51 AM. |

I'm for the truth. Jobs was not as innovative as people think. It's a lot easier to reinvent a product that already exists then it is to come up with a totally new product. Apple doesn't do new. They do changes to products others already have. That is the truth.
I am not saying that all the things Apple has done are bad. The problem however is that because Apple gets the press, companies that do the same things better don't get the press they deserve. I'm hoping the new leadership at Apple can bring out new products. Products that never existed before. Not take someone else's and redo it. But make something that nobody else has made before. |

Actually, I believe most people her are "for the truth". And there will be many opportunities on this board and other places to debate Steve Jobs's lack of innovation, and Apple's lack of creativity. There will be many opportunities to debate who we don't admire that much, and list "other IT geniuses" that we think are more important than Steve Jobs, and why we think their deaths are more important.
But Steve Jobs' family just buried him this afternoon. He was a father, a husband, a friend, a coworker, and a respected figure to many, and he just passed away at age 56. Do people really think this is the time and place to try to debate people about why you don't think Steve Jobs was "all that?" To post publicly, as one blogger did today, "people are too polite to say this, but here's a big list of all his negative qualities"? Do they think his family and friends don't browse the Internet, and maybe stuff like that, even if it is "the truth", might be hurtful so soon after he died? This isn't about the right to free speech, or having a right to voice an opinion. Of course we all respect those rights. But there is also simple human decency, and respect for others, especially when their grieving period has just started. Even if you feel nothing yourself about his passing, the fact that others have expressed it publicly, in this thread, and in the world, should be a clue to maybe let well enough alone for a bit. Just a little respect in our corner of the Internet. ![]() |
