my last hard drive, which is 1To as i mentioned, cost me 71.80€, in november 2008.
I bought my first hard drive in 1983. $800 US for 10 Megabytes (bare drive)...

Now I can buy 12 Terabytes for that price... that's a million times more storage in 27 years, and the dollars buy less food and such...

wow. clytie, your rant reminded me of one of our seminal australian-book-industry-shortcomings rants, by none other than seminal australian llounge llama montsnmags. it *may* comfort you to discover that buying paper books in australia can be similarly frought with peril (well, probably not really, but i hear misery loves company, so at least you'll know you're not alone). you've got all my sympathy. i live in france, and to be honest we're probably even worse off than you (trying to make you feel better, not one-up you), because not only do we get slammed with all the same geo-restrictions as you lot do, but quite a lot of us don't even read english (i know, you're stunned ), and let me tell you, the selection of ebooks available in french is still, well, pitiful, even compared to the selection available in english to france.

a tiny word of advice that hopefully will at the least preserve you from similar infuriating frustration in future ; there are ways to get rid of drm from your ebooks, so you don't have to worry about activating them etc. as long as you keep backups. i can't tell you explicitly how on the forum, but for getting rid of adobe's drm, try googling something like "adobe inept drm". i do this for all my ebooks and i was never so glad as after i reinstalled windows and discovered i can no longer download my .lit (MS Reader format) books from my fictionwise bookshelf nor open the ones on my harddrive, and i can't get into my stupid "password" account to reactivate the bloody thing either.

anyway, feel free to rant whever you like, it's been elevated to an art form around here.

Thanks for the thread. I've enjoyed the discussions, and my family also rescues abandoned/damaged cats (although I myself am a dog person). These cats tend to have odd but endearing personalities. Sadly, you lose some, because they're just too damaged by the time they find you, or you find them.
i am always encouraged when i hear of people who do that ; it gives me hope for humankind in general to know there are people showing that amount of kindness and generosity to animals.

something to look into, certainly.

In this moment I am the patriarch. I have AdultDaughter with Grandchid and LittleDaughter. Sunny, on the lawn, everybody happy and laughing. Adults drink Leffe from the bottle, not me, children water from micro bottles of Evian. Bless you

wow. and just imagine if i had bought my 1to harddrive for the same (proportional) price as my original 15go drive ! (...divided by 15... carry the... times 1024...) if i've done the maths properly (no guarantee, i can tell my coffee never took effect today) it would have cost me 6963€ !!!!!

Wow... impressive. How is the 9TB configured? Is it a NAS of some kind or on a Windows Home Server machine? RAID?

What do you store on it?

I feel so small with only 2TB of external storage hooked to my iMac. a 500GB that holds backups and a 1.5TB that holds my digital media.

I am about to scan in all our photos soon though... so I might pick up another 2TB drive soon.

I have (still in the process) ripped all my DVDs. I encode them all as H.264 cause I really don't care about all the extras. Also for the TV show ones I want each TV show as its own file.

However, I don't plan to get rid of the DVDs, but do plan to move them to a less accessible place. This will give us more room on book shelfs for my Board Games and Video Games and the few books I decided to keep after going ebook.

I love the geeky posts!

hm, i'm really tempted. those dvd boxes take up ridiculous amounts of space, especially when you consider the size of their actual contents. it's just absurd. i do like the extras (when there are any, which is not always) but i could rip the extras too. i would have to look into codecs and such though since i've never done that before.

Well, it's sorts spread out. 5 computers, remember. 2 Aspire Revo's each bumped to 500 gig (2.5) internally, and External USB 2.0 Kingwin Removable dual bay drive, with 2, 2 tera drives in it (That's 5 Tera, right there). Two tower computers (one with 3 Tera in removable cases.) Plus 274 Gig on the ME machine (the other tower) and there's a bunch on the company laptop plugged in right now...

And that's not including the other 2 Tera drives not plugged in that I can swap in and out of the Kingwin Removable...

A one terrabyte drive is one tenth the price of my first hard drive. It was a 5 megabyte drive..... circa 1986...

How many books could we fit on a one terra drive?
And the need for more storage is increasing rapidly!

Over The Air recording is legal here (Betamax decision - 1984)...

I heard tell that ripping is just a matter of loading the software on a machine, dropping in a DVD, telling where on the harddrive to put the files and punching 2-3 buttons. But it may be a felony in your jurisdiction, (it is here)
