November ?! Forget it.

An Irex survival strategy:

Revamp the Iliad, quickly bring out a 2.1 version; priced low; possibly ( but not necessarily ) tweaked hardware; don't overstate what it can do, just a "Touchscreen Wifi Ereader"; Totally Open Source; fund one developer to work on apps and coordinate and support any third-party developers who want to help ( there are about 5 still semi-active, I believe... ); concentrate first on power saving, then on anything that makes the reading experience better, especially for large docs; ?! 3G via the CF slot ?!

Then, soon, an Iliad 3.0, just a bit more tweaked hardware, also totally Open Source; possibly plug-in 3G; same app source as 2.1, apps run on all Iliad devices.

Evolution not stuttering revolution; Using the new publicity around Ereaders to sell a device that is already out there; Exploiting a niche, not trying to fight the (really) big boys on their turf.

And not waiting until November !

I must say I don't expect too much from the software of a device. As a Linux guy I never had this 'it has to work perfectly from the beginning'-attitude.

As long as the hardware is bugfree and the system is more or less open you can always have your working OS for your ebook reader.

As a comparison I also hate these guys at the airport who thinks the world will come to and end if they have to wait for 2 hours for the next plane.

Between complaining and being a whiny complainer is a fine line ...

Are you serious? Do you expect everyone who drives a car to be able to strip it down to nuts and bolts and reconfigure it to its liking?

I am in the IT and have been for a long time. I don't have any issues tinkering with things for fun. However, I also want to be able to buy a product and just use it and expect reasonable support from the vendor.

A bit rich don't you think? I think that one of the moderators of this forum made a point about making remarks of this nature.
Let's stick to the forum etiquette, eh? You as a "Linux Guy" should be able to understand that

There is nothing wrong with mobipocket [.prc] its just that ePub is now the new format standard and there is not ' plenty of stuff ' in .prc format (anymore)

And stripping off the DRM is just a 4 minutes job with a script and with Calibre I convert ePub > .prc

There is no format standard, that's one of the biggest problems with eBooks. Yes, ePub is popular now with a lot of sites, but so was Mobipocket a couple years ago. Will ePub be the popular format next year? Who knows?

For this reason a good support to ebook formats from the company selling an ebook reader is fundamental. iRex is unable to do it. I can install new firmware for cybook to read mobipocket or ePub but my iLiad is dropped from iRex.

And btw iRex promised the ePub support for DR1000 one year ago, and now is selling the DR800 promising new firmware in april... no more iRex!

Well, that is true, but the publishers take a very good look to each other and to the marked and eBooks will be published in the most common format.

And for iLiad users there is a spark of hope: since iRex made the iLiad V2 open source, the ' only' thing is to write some software urself, to make the iRex read ePub.
In meantime, I strip of DRM and convert wtih Calibre ePub into .prc

perhaps you've missed this: FBReader
The iLiad has been reading ePub since March 2007, almost 3 years now.

So is Amazon, if ePub is what you're using to determine "good support".

FBRead has got a very poor support of epub, no support for DRM at all, no support for incorporated font, basic layout.

It's better than you get on the Kindle though.

That would have to be a matter of opinion. The Kindle is not attractive to me for a variety of reasons, but it does offer formatting such as the poster seems to want. I suppose your point is probably that the Kindle provides no on-board support for ePub, which is true.

Yes, that is my point. Apparently that lack of support is inexcusable for iRex, but nobody seems to care that the most popular eBook device doesn't support it either.
