I hear what you are saying, but I still think that if such a deal has been made at a large scale (free upgrade or whatever), an anonymus post would appear on a forum or news site somewhere - regardless of any non-disclosure agreements.

So you´re sorted, but would you like hint how other people in NL can get the same deal ? - I bought the same now-unsupported hardware as you...

Or maybe Shaggy might be able to use his contacts to help us out here ?

I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm planning on selling mine on eBay as soon as I decide what to buy next.

Well, As I know, there had been some invitations to take action: to form a group at the NRC ePaper-forum. (wich is not a public entered-forum)

Ah. So ( as far as you know ) only NRC subscribers are being compensated for their Iliad purchase ?

I don't think it is connected to the subscribtion. The NRC also acted as a reseller of the Iliad. So some dutch customers did buy their Iliad via NRC.

I don't understand what is the big deal with expecting value for money with some people? I certainly do not expect anybody to carry me on their back (as so you appear to think for some reason). But I do expect to get what I pay for and if I don't I express my opinion.
As I said before, I do enjoy my Iliad, I am not happy with iRex support (or rather lack thereof). I am not going to buy another iRex product or recommend it to anyone else.

BTW, my grudge is not iRex not replying to emails or such - just overall lack of firmware updates, battery life and lack of sleep mode.
I'm afraid that 2 years is a LONG time in technology terms.

I bought a supposed HD telly just before the advent of HDMI & HD "Ready". When we got the top of the range Panasonic it was considered cutting edge but was rendered virtually pointless within a year thanks to format issues.

I own a Sony PRS-505 but I bought an iLiad for my Dad a couple years back when they 1st came out. He is VERY happy with it. I suggest that you research products properly before you buy them (this is not directed specifically at you, m-reader, just in general). I bought my Sony because I wanted my eReader for purchasing eBooks online & reading novels in an efficient way. I bought my Dad the iLiad because of its ability to read & edit PDFs. It is very good for this sort of thing and he has not bought a single ebook, epub or otherwise, since he's owned it & yet he uses it all the time.

However, should he want to buy some ebooks, what is so wrong with mobipocket? There is plenty of stuff in that format & they work fine on the iLiad - I don't really understand the necessity of it having to read epub.

I don't really understand some of the hostility toward Shaggy when what he is basically saying is correct. Sure, I understand people feeling a little let down by the supposed lack of support but is that seriously enough to demand a replacement off what is a relatively small business? I dob't believe so. I am of the opinion that if you are thinking of parting company with £500 you take a good, long look at the product you are spending it on 1st.

I know that people seem to believe that there have been 'broken promises' but epub was never one of them. I bought my Dad's iLiad early on & I was already of the understanding that it would not work with DRM epubs. Some people seem to think this is an 'easy fix' & criticised Shaggy's comparisons but it is not as simple as just writing a bit of software. DRM is a complicated business. There are LOADS of 3rd party DRM'd videos/music that will not & will never work with Apple because Apple will not sell their digital rights to 3rd parties for all sorts of reasons. If you do not acquire the rights then you cannot access the content no matter what software you write I'm afraid & therefore the matter is probably outside of iRex's control.

I would say that it would EXTREMELY difficult to bring about a lawsuit based on what you thought you were getting for your money. Unless people have 1st hand evidence that iRex promised epub compatibility then I don't see how it could go to court. The battery issue on its own is surely not enough to warrant full compensation of this nature, is it?

offer?

I think that a good move from iRex would be to offer a price reduction on new devices (iRex Digital Reader?) to former iLiad clients.

50% at least. I would submit voluntary.

it's only an idea.

Hi Basskadet, I like your post, it makes sense (as in I understand your point very well). Don't get me wrong, I would not demand compensation from Irex because I know there is no legal basis for it.
However, I do know when I'm ripped off and I do not keep quiet about it .
Irex had a wonderful product and they ruined it with their incompetence.

WTR Shaggy, I respect him and his opinions on this topic and many others that he is contributing to on this forum. In some things we can agree to dissagree but obviously the guy shares the passion for this technology and has far more knowledge on the subject that I do. I respect that.

Anyway, I am back to my PDA for reading now - I'm really careful about making a decision about my next reader. I can tell you, reading on PDA after eInk sucks!

Cheers,

m-reader

Err. No. I would't go for it, no way.
I can understand if you would, but I wouldn't do it on principle. I am sure Irex makes great tech, but it's the way the treat their customers that really gets me.
