I love mine.
ok, there are some improvements points but it's handy and ok for reading...... !
This is my main goal of the the use of this device.

Improvement areas are the Sony software (I use Calibre instead), functionality of note taking (why no OCR functionality ?), multi language dictionary support, more contrast on the screen and possibility to add software to the device (eg clock function etc)........

donald, you'll never see OCR on these. their computer power is on par with an advanced digital watch, not your laptop. advanced features require an advanced computer, which means bigger, hotter, more power and less battery life. these systems are designed to take some text data and display it on the screen.

as for contrast, i think that's more about the eInk technology, which is still in its infancy. give it a few more years.

I've had my PRS 600 for just about a week now - an early Birthday and Christmas present. Like others before me, I much prefer Calibre over the Sony library - particularly the ability to adjust metadata and build collections based on tags.

I use mine for both academic and leisure reading, and currently have over 800 "books" (ranging from two page briefing papers to hundred odd page research papers). The note taking capability using either drawing or virtual keyboard appealed to me, the silence of bed-time reading appealed to Mrs.

Disappointed by the availability of ebooks in Waterstones; wowed by the contents of both Gutenberg and here

Regards, Tubs.

How do you like it for your academic reading? I've heard a lot of complaints about that sort of reading (for basically all readers). I'm not a serious researcher, mind, just looking to keep up with literature in my field and jotting the odd comment for my own purposes.

I had a PRS-700, sold it to a friend and bought a PRS-600 and a Kindle DX. I think the Kindle is okay but I use the Sony far more often. The Kindle DX is big and clumsy... I feel akward taking it out in public but it is better for PDF books. The Sony is a better size and more discreet... if you can really call it that. I find that I spend more time telling people how much I love it than I do reading when I am trying to read in a public place!

I adore my firmware updated PRS-500!
I experienced great pain from liseuse withdrawal while it was sent away for upgrade, and don't want to lose it again!

I've found it a breeze, I'm a mature student and use my travel time to and from my work place to do most of my studying. The last thing you need (especially on English public transport) is to carry your work and study materials around so being able to download study material along with the ability to highlight text and add notes is an absolute dream with the 600.

I'm still practicing with Calibre, so converting PDF to LRF/EPUB and getting the right font sizes should become easier, but the zoom functions helps out for my tired old eyes

Do you deal with many PDFs with columns? I myself am a uni student, and really am looking for an ereader to replace having to print out all my lecture notes - most of which are either MS Powerpoint slides converted to PDF (6 slides per page) or academic journals.
