While that seems reasonable, we can easily find counter examples. I have yet to find an English speaker able to correctly pronounce "ballet", or "mêlée", or "guerrilla", or "mosquito" yet those are perfectly valid English words (which English speakers pronounce as they see fit, and that's fine).

I'm not saying "liseuse" should be used in English, and I don't know if it will be as widely accepted as the above words, but there's nothing intrinsically worse in this word that would prevent its use, I think.

(Personally, I find the use of acronyms like IANAL, YMMV, AFAIK, and whatnot much more annoying, and harder for the non-English speaker, than the occasional foreign word, but that's a battle that should be fought elsewhere. )

Oh, by the way, here is a link to examples of foreign words recently introduced in the "official" French dictionary, if anyone finds it interesting: http://www.academie-francaise.fr/dic...etrangers.html

Personally, I use "ebook" and "ebook reader," at least for the most part. Sometimes I throw a hyphen in there when I feel like being hyphenated. I call my own device anything from "ebook reader," to Sony, to just Reader.

I wouldn't use the word "liseuse" in speech for the same reason kazbates doesn't. People around here (I think I'm probably within 50 miles of her) just wouldn't understand it.

Beyond that, I don't care what others call it, so long as I can call the device what I want to call it. (ie. "MINE!" )

That's my point!

Try saying this: "e-liseuse 'em, Dano!"

It just sounds all wrong and horrible! As if Batman was confused and slid down the wrong pole marked "Robin."

Ummm... *which* MobileRead regulars??? I don't hesitate to point out that as an MR regular I *never* agreed to its meaning.

They were not reading the ebook, they were listening to an audio book on an iPod. The problem with calling the device an *ebook* is that it is misleading and ultimately incorrect. I am not saying that the Hannah Montana characters should be used as anything even remotely considered as an intellectual resource, but it does point out the ambiguity of the word.
There is no ambiguity to the meaning of the word "ebook". There *IS* a tendency towards less-than-accurate thinking on Hanna Montana's show - and within her mind, if her various public statements can be taken as proof.

Phew! I've only just caught up with this thread (been on holiday, in the Dordogne) and I'm a little astonished at the passions aroused. So there's a French word for ereader/e-reader etc. And it's even possible (shock horror!) that the word might make it's way into English, gasp! No relation to "matinee", "encore", "mileu", "sang froid", "comme il faut", "crepes", "sauce" then? Given that English has looted vast quantities of its vocabulary from other languages (verandah, pyjamas, kedgeree, banjo, chimpanzee, ketchup, algorithm, alembic, algebra, monsoon, muslin, sauna) what's the problem? the word exists. Use it if you like it, don't use it if you do not like it. Relish the fact that there's a rich vocabulary available. Me, I'll refer to my device as an e-reader in conversation, except, with the cognoscenti, I may refer to my liseuse. :-)

In french it has some (not overwhelming) legitimacy as it has supposedly seen limited use outside of this site, however in english the word has zero legitimacy and thus is no better than any other random name that somebody might choose to use.

I'm not sure that Googling your preferred name and publishing the figures proves anything other than that there is not a commonly agreed term for these things yet.
Those figures do seem to indicate that there are a number of terms that are being widely used though and thus no need to borrow a word that the french haven't even fully adopted themselves.
