PS - This is a bad photo, the new one shot under a light tent shows the bright pinkness.

It didn't until you said that, but now it kind of looks like a ball of balogna (or the end of a hot dog.)

Why'd you say that? I thought it was pretty until I imagined it as food in a cage. (I don't even like bolgna or hot dogs.)

I know! Once you hear it out loud (or read it in your head), there's no way to ever see it as anything but baloney forever after! Maybe I should call it "Bologna Stone" and people will think it is Italian?

That makes it sound romantic. I'd go with that.

There I agree with you. There is a way around it.

Hunting Season!

Get a license, go out, and help control the wild animal population. Take the meat to a processing station and have sausage, ground chuck, steaks, etc.. made from them.

I think each license allows a certain number of deer, trurkey, etc.. Bag your limit, process them, and you've got meat to last you months. And the more hunters in the household, the more meat you'll get.

PLUS - you will not be supporting the slaughter houses and meat-packing plants that turn your stomach with the ill-treatments.

You grow your own veggies and fruits in your garden, why not kill your own meat? Raise chickens for eggs, goats for milk. Actually, I hear that milking goats (goats bred for milking) make very good eating as well.

This response will probably surprise people.... If I were going to eat meat, I would hunt. I have no objection to responsible hunters who eat what they kill. I'd prefer not to, but I would if I had to. Before I became a vegetarian I ate both duck and venison hunted by an uncle. I knew exactly what I was eating.

We've considered keeping goats. (I'm quite fond of goat cheese.) The Muffin Man (my husband) raised chickens as a kid and doesn't want to do it again. He likes chickens, but had a hard time eating the eggs after a while, and couldn't eat the young roosters when they were slaughtered at all.

Goats also grow an undercoat that can be spun into quite nice yarn. But I think I should finish my doctorate before taking on any more responsibilities....

A message to all vegetarians: please do not turn this into a struggle between right and wrong. Live and let live! Be a vegan or vegetarian, but don't try to take away what we need. Humans are adapted to eating meat. Just look at your teeth. Plant eating animals have several stomachs. You don't fault a lion for killing a gazelle, why blame humans for doing what nature intended them to do? For me a life without meat would be so miserable, I cannot even imagine it. When did human culture start to develop? When they started eating meat. Plant eating animals spend their whole day in search for food and eating (since it takes a lot more food to get the same nourishment from plants). So when early hominids started to eat meat they had free time. They started thinking, their brains developed.

Killing animals for food is not inhumane, it is necessary for our health and survival. Important is that animals are being raised in the right conditions and treated well.

HansTWN, your advice to live and let live would be stronger if you did not then proceed to try to convince us that eating meat is "right." It's a choice, and choices have consequences. I agree that people should decide for themselves what consequences they prefer and choose accordingly. If you want to base your decisions on what humans have eaten in the past or the shape of our teeth, you are free to do so, but not everyone needs to agree with your reasoning, just as not everyone needs to agree with my reasoning regarding limited resources or health concerns.

The value of a discussion like this is that we can see each other's reasons and consider them in our own decisions, though we may still not come to the same conclusions. I think this works best when we can say "I decided X and this is why," rather than "I decided X and you should too" or "I decided X for these reasons, which you must also accept as being of prime importance."

Hans, if you'd read through the last few pages, you would see that we are not having a struggle between right and wrong. We decided some time ago that we all have the right and ability to make our own decisions. Now we are discussing our beliefs in an adult manner, asking questions and answering with our own opinions. We are learning about each other's positions and beliefs.

You repeated several points that we have already discussed. I don't think we need to go back and repeat our answers.

Anytime a decision is made for "moral, ethical, humanitarian or religious reasons," you automatically throw yourself on the side of "right", as you see it.

Yes, we all have the right to make our own dietary decisions......and the right to 'look askance' at those whose decisions differ from ours.
