THE AMITYVILLE VEGETARIAN HORROR!
From the N.Y. Daily News, May 30th:
'Amityville' on PETA plate PETA, the animal rights group, wants to lease the famed haunted house and transform it into an exhibit that would spook visitors from eating meat and using animal products. "In our horror house, the sound of slaughterhouse blades whirring while animals scream for their lives would play over loudspeakers," PETA veep Tracy Reiman wrote to the owners of the Long Island house. The exhibit also would feature branding irons and electrified cow prods. Souvenirs would include dolls that resemble a knife-wielding Ronald McDonald. ( Lindsay Goldwert ) Bring the kiddies! |

Imho there should be a real-time webcam in every abattoir.
People should be able to see what goes on inside them; and be reassured or otherwise about where the meat on their plate is coming from. |

And for the picnic lunch, ... tofu sticks.
This thread brings to my mind a live scene happened under my very eyes: Chioggia, just south of Venice. In the middle of the summer. Big crowd around a huge frying pan where little fishes are fried and nice platters are given for free to the bystanders, mostly tourist, with plastic cups of excellent white. An initiative of the tourist board. A lady tourist, foreigner, says to the cook, dressed like a sailor, that is pouring still jumping tiny fishes in the hot pan. Good man, oh the little fishes, how much they must suffer! And in his sweet dialect he replies Don't you worry, kind lady. They are used to it... And hands her a nice platefull of the little culprits. I got an other plastic cup of white. Un'ombra, a shadow, they call it in that part of the world. That like a shadow insinuates into you and undoes the knots and kinks into smooth serendipity. |

I have always wondered about kids growing up on farms and making friends with the animals. I get upset when I lose a cat or a dog, but these kids see their friends go every other day. "Tonight son we are eating Joe the cow. Go get my sledgehammer." |

I sometimes wonder if those PETA guys wouldn't actually try to hinder development of more humane slaughtering because it would ruin their scare-tactics.
If they'd instead pour all their work and time into better methods for meat production, we'd probably already have safe clone-meat that never had consciousness (like in that one episode of Eureka. Surely the idea itself isn't new.) Of course it's wrong to hurt living beings. But just turning away isn't the answer. (Be it from meat or the cruelty.) Better methods have to be found. |

the way I was brought up, we always bought and slaughtered oue own animals from various clients of my Dads. one of his best buddies from the Marines was ethnic Basque and ended up out east of Boulder. he had a HUGE sheep farm and a bunch of children. starting at about 5 every kid was given about 5 lambs every spring. there were their repsonsibility to raise, doctor, show (if desired) push towards breeding if appropriate. when we would come out to have a lamb done, the kids all put their lambs ear tag numbers in a coffee can and one was pulled. that kid had to be there for the entire procedure but also got every cent of profit
