Go to your calibre configuration directory and rename it to calibre.bak and see if that solves the problem.

Go to %appdata% and then rename calibre so you start with no config. Then see if the viewer works.

Do you use Windows File History, the September Update to Windows (10 & 11) broke it, do a search for ==>> "Windows File History has stopped working".

I use File History, but the problem from the Sept Update hasn't had any direct/noticeable effect on calibre here.

Just had an idea: appears that on this dual boot PC (W10/Linux - each on their own disc) Calibre works fine in Linux. Would that rule out gaphics driver issues?

NO!
Each OS ha its own drivers (they become part of the OS).

FWIW using the same Calibre library on a dual boot can cause subtle issues.

If anything, that would make a graphics driver issue more likely. Linux does not use the same drivers as Windows so you are using different drivers.

Aha and thanks - so things to try:
- driver: revert to older version... would you explain to me how/where? (Screenshot)
- "Go to %appdata% and then rename calibre ..": can you point to which: AppData/Local of Roaming and then...

BTW: not using the same library on both OS: emptied the library, just test a few books. Calibre on Linux just to see if it works - it does, till it bumps into ADEditions not cooperatin.

But given he's using calibre 9.x, it should not be using the graphics driver by default. Also, in safe mode it would not have been using the graphics driver.

So something else may be causing the problem is my guess.

Also: no other graphical issues on this PC

I thought of ADEditions interfering with Calibre, but un-installing ADE made no difference.

The difference is between using the graphics driver with GPU acceleration and the graphics drivers without GPU acceleration. In either case, you are still using the graphics driver/hardware to put pixels on the display.

Unless you select safe boot and base video to force use of Windows built-in graphics drivers, safe boot will still use the NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, whatever graphics driver. Admittedly, you will need to work with a 640x480 or 800x600 display resolution since the last time I did this, the computer wouldn't let me go to even 1024x768. You can also just enable base video by itself but again, the screen resolution will take you back a few decades.
