K4 How to fake register old Kindle 4?

Amazon recently disabled registration for old Kindles (I would link a press release/news article here, but I can't find one at the moment. It was everywhere a few months ago).

I like the Kindle 4 and similar models, and have a few that I got from car boot sales, eBay, etc. and I would like to fake register them without any connection to Amazon. Does anyone know how I would go about this? fakereg only works on newer Kindles. I have searched the forum and only found people asking "How?" with no useful responses.

I have done some research on community Discord, and because Discord is an unsearchable non-public data silo, I want to share my findings here, in case someone else can help.

I am UK region. I have 3-4 K4s that I can try to register. 1x is banned (eBay purchase)
A bit nervous in case it wipes userdata

When registering my K4, I used my PC to trigger the OTP code for 2FA. I signed into Amazon on the PC, they sent me an OTP, and I used it on the Kindle instead of on the PC.
I registered during initial setup after a factory reset. For the password, I entered my regular password and added the OTP to the end of it.

I haven't had any luck yet, I get the error "The Kindle cannot connect at this time"

It could be a compatibility issue with your Wi-Fi. Have you tried connecting to a different Wi-Fi network?
If you can create a hotspot with your phone, try that

I tried with Win10 hotspot (2.4GHz, Intel AC8265) , but that didn't work. I will try with regular wifi. EDIT: I tried with regular wifi, had the same problem. Maybe this Kindle is blacklisted, too. They're all second hand ones from eBay, car boot sales, which I hacked and never took online. Google loads via the web browser, but registration throws up the error Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again. If the problem persists, restart your Kindle from the menu in Settings and try again.

I tried putting a reginfo with generic blank/fake data in the XML fields (similar to the one I posted above) but it did not fakeregister the Kindle. I think it needs some crypto keys which are unknown or device specific. I did locate client.p12 and client.pem in /var/local/java/prefs/certs/ but no idea if or how they're related to the reginfo file

What do you need it registered for? IIRC, you can skip registration. After jailbreaking it will break the MKK dev certs, but that's what the Amazon server block script fixes.

Please attach your images instead of linking to imgr. Three problems. Not everyone can see them. They will eventually expire. And if they are important to your message, then your message will be useless when they've expired or cannot be seen.

How do I attach images? As files? I know not everyone can see Imgur, I'm in the UK, had to use a VPN to upload them, but couldn't see any alternative as the forum's image function asks for an image URL. I have tried to attach the images as files, hopefully that works.

I want to register the Kindle 4 as certain Kindle functions are blocked/hidden unless it is registered with Amazon. I've never owned a registered K4, but I understand that unless registered:
- Time setting will be missing
- Collections will be missing
- There will be a setup/register nag "book" on the homescreen

Newer Kindles lock Bluetooth settings, and have an even more annoying registration nag when unregistered. (They can however be easily fake-registered these days, though Bluetooth is still missing, which can be worked around with https://github.com/zampierilucas/kindle-hid-passthrough)

The time setting missing is important, as depending on the date of the Kindle's RTC, it can break KUAL. There is no way of setting the clock without this setting, except for inside of KOReader, which will be inaccessible if KUAL is timebombed. As far as I know, KUAL still has a timebomb certificate expiry, which means all my Kindles will brick themselves one day when my (grand)children are using them.

You could check to see if any of the jailbreaks work with an unregistered K4.

The jailbreak works fine on unregistered never-connected-to-internet (?) factory reset Kindle 4s. I've jailbroken several. But they all need a hotfix and time/date setting after jailbreaking, as if the date passes 17 April 2025, then older versions of KUAL will not open, and a newer version must be used which kicks the ball a bit further down the road. (The newer version of KUAL does not open if the date is before 17 April 2025, making it a bit of a chicken or the egg puzzle).

I did find a note of mine suggesting that the official setting can only adjust time, not date (uncertain if true).
