Troubleshooting Kobo Aura Edition 2 N236 V1
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what is going on with my Kobo Aura Edition 2 N236 V1. I've tried quite a few things by now and I'm stuck.
The Kobo originally stopped booting properly and was stuck on the multilingual “Restoring / Réinitialisation / Wiederherstellen…” screen with the five empty progress blocks. Now it's still stuck on that screen, but it doesn't respond to the power-button at all. All I see is the “Restoring / Réinitialisation / Wiederherstellen…” screen and five empty blocks. What I've done so far:
I've also tried the manual reset/power procedures multiple times: holding the power button for 20–30+ seconds, releasing it, waiting, powering it on again, doing this both connected and disconnected from USB power, etc. At one point holding the power button caused the mounted E:/F: drives to disappear, so the Kobo does seem to respond to the power button. The display, however, never changes from the multilingual Restoring screen. I know e-ink can retain the last image even when the device is actually off, so I'm not sure whether the restore process is really running or whether it is failing before the screen gets refreshed. I've also left it connected to a known-good charger for a couple of hours, with no visible change. So at this point I have:
Does anyone have an idea what I should check next? Could this still be a boot/SD issue, or am I now more likely looking at a battery, display connection, or other hardware problem? Thanks! |

The serial number looks wrong. The Aura E2 serial numbers should start with N236 as the first 4 characters. You should be able to see the serial number on the bottom of the ereader.

I can barely read it, but it says "Kobo Aura", 'Model N236'. And on the other side... something starting with CCA. And IFETEL RCPK... (and then some numbers). Which one is the serial number you think? (I'm really hoping to get this thing to work, it was my late father's). |

Generally, the serial number is on the bottom or the right hand edge but check all 4 edges. You should see something like S/N:N236 and then the remainder of the serial number. On all the Kobos I've looked at, the serial number looks as if it has been engraved not printed.
If nothing else, try the Aura E2 V2 image. It won't hurt the device. If you have tried both, then it's very likely to be a hardware issue and beyond economic repair. |

I know the serial number is there and at times, it's taken me a while to locate it. The engraved black on black small print is a pain. OTOH, it's more durable than the printed information.

What is the number on the motherboard?
I have two N236 Aura Ed2 V1 units (the seventh character of the serial number is "0"). The motherboard numbers are 4B2. I’m just wondering if the Aura Ed2 V2 has the same number. |

Still in the process of trying to get a workable image on an SD-card. Balena Etcher suddenly decided that the 8GB card is 'too small'. And the other card I have, Balena keeps on giving me error messages... sigh.
