@Quoth: in a glimpse of fortune, if I can understand, the test would be trying an epub page within the black text, and compare it to the same page converted in cbr (as cbr are image files, and so them background, in case it's white, is "painted white" and not an empty layer like it can be on an epub)? And so to see if on Kaleido 3 there is a dpi difference?
Here is a sample ebook I made. It shows a paragraph from Alice in Wonderland in black and then again in pure red and then an illustration from the book, first in black and then pure red. The red versions will look noticeably more pixelated than the black versions on Kaleido screens. White in a JPEG (it doesn't matter if it's CBR or ePub) appears the same as the background in a text based book, all the eInk cells are "off". I purposefully made the images in the sample have a white background.

Apart that Pocketbook doesn't seems to support xmi files images, I guess that the reason in there is simply beause as to render a red text, the filter will use mostly the red "dots" from the color filter array..
I was rather wondering if the black text into the baloons, on comics, if the inner baloons' color is white, might be rendered more close to its 300 dpi. I guess it can be likely so.

Especially given how much people on this forum enjoy reading with the lights off and outdoors.

Yeah, exactly. Black and white content is sharp even on a image with other color content. Black on color won't look as good.

The iPad Air is an LCD screen. My iPhone 15 Pro Max has an OLED screen and when I crank the brightness, it's nowhere near as dull as that iPad Air.

The OLED screens used on iPhones/iPads are better then the LCD screen when outdoors.
