If either term only applies when the statement is false then it's (probably) neither, as you will (probably) be able to use your device after the deadline if you're happy sideloading books. |

They forgot this part:
If you deregister or factory reset these devices, you will not be able to re-register or use these devices [to connect with Amazon] in any way. |

I have a question: If one takes Amazon out of the picture, is it possible to still use those Kindles simply to sideload books using calibre? (Assuming the device has been deregistered and/or factory reset, and using a USB connection to a computer.)

I wondered about this as well. So, I just deregistered my Kindle Touch (D01200) wirelessly from the device itself. I am still able to read the ebooks I previously downloaded wirelessly from Amazon. I then transferred a DeDrm’d ebook via USB from Calibre. I can read that as well. There is a message on the home screen about registering the device and a link to do so. But I can ignore it and proceed to the library.

I can't speak for every device model conclusively, but the Kindle 4 that I de-registered a while ago and factory reset can still read sideloaded books with no problem. I loaded up a bunch of non-DRM books and use it as my "purse reader" so I don't have to worry about having my account accessed if I lose it.

Newer as opposed to older. It doesn't have to be the newest as we've found out. The thing we don't know is what's the earliest firmware version that Amazon can hijack the DRM?

Likely any that are not being "cut-off". It's about surveillance for KU as much as KFX DRM.

However those devices can run firmware as old as 5.4.0, which predates the release of KFX format. I wonder what can be achieved with a jailbreak and firmware downgrade on that and similar devices. Will Amazon still allow that to function or will devices running older firmware be unable to download books in the future? |

I have a Paperwhite 1 (firmware 5.6.11). This morning I downloaded a few books from Amazon. Calibre was unable to load the AZ3 books using DeDRM 10.0.9.
Thought I had until May 20 to pull my last few books? Or am i doing something wrong? |

I just tested on my PW 1 (5th generation) and no problems. Did you check to make sure calibre had the correct serial number in the DeDRM setup?

K3 with azw3 is OK today, though most ebook pages already claim the book can't be bought for K3, they still can.
PW3 with KFX stopped working with noDRM weeks ago. No doubt this is why they disabled browser downloads last year. Forces people to use WiFi and get KFX patched. Hence kindles without KFX getting chucked off the ecosystem. |
