If they will still work unregistered, purely for sideloading DRM-free files via USB, they may still have some use for a fair number of people. But in that case I would hope the sellers would mention it.

I’m assuming that they WILL work unregistered also after the cut-off date, since I can’t see any purpose to Amazon somehow bricking them completely (if it’s technically even possible).

That's what I am hoping but we will have to see after May 20th. I plan to use them to lend friends books. I'm past caring what Amazon think anymore. There is no need to block those Kindles as they still work perfectly (yes I know WHY Amazon are doing it, I just don't agree with it, its all about control and greed)

Yes. I strongly believe so. Network connectivity is getting blocked on these devices. We should be able to side-load and read books. Amazon has not announced that the device would be unusable. I believe that the device will be usable.

You definitely can, I have an older Kindle 4 that failed to re-register, so it's my "purse reader" because I can just load the books I want and not worry that someone has access to my account if I lose it. I'll do the same with my second K4 (got a 2-pack on Ebay a while ago) once it gets blocked on May 20.

I much prefer the physical buttons on those devices and my PocketBook 4 over the newer e-ink touch screens, so they're still very useful as readers for me.

This is the main reason my Kindle is prevented from ever going online and connecting with Amazon. Who knows what Amazon will slip in during future firmware "upgrades". IMHO, it's best to just prevent Amazon from ever talking to your Kindle. Side load everything. But that's just my opinion, YMMV.

It's not firmware downloads that are worrying me but rather the diagnostics exploit that Amazon has used to update the DRM on devices with no notice. So far no one has confirmed that blocking OTA updates will prevent the use of that exploit.

But never connecting to wifi does. Also haertig has posted in the past about deleting home wifi access point from his kindle and changing access point password and never send access point password to amazon. So that only leaves amazon long ago putting in code to steal service from unprotected access points, which has never been documented to have happened, and even that still requires enabling wifi.
