If Amazon has injected the new KFX DRM into 5.12.2.2, then it seems inevitable that it will roll out to all KFX-capable Kindles shortly. And once all pre-KFX Kindles are shut out on May 20, it looks like the end of using eink Kindles as a source of calibre-friendly ebooks

And how long do we think this will last? "the end" until it isn't?

I'm guessing this will be like a game of leapfrog for Kindle DRM removal (for those that want to play).

A new DRM gets synced by Amazon.
People sync there books for a while.
Later, the DRM gets defeated.
People put their Kindles in Airplane mode, disable wifi, ...
People strip the DRM from their previous purchases.
Wash, rinse, repeat.

The effort to find ways to retrieve/rebuild the local keys necessary to allow DRM removal is never quite as concerted/furious as when it's not currently possible.

So, Amazon has a way to inject new KFX DRM without disturbing the software on it. If something like this exists, it should be stored inside the device in some other storage location that is not disturbed by software update.

I found this 3 year old thread for 5.12.2.2 but not sure on the relevance.

Over in the discussion at Sat's GitHub repo about this happening to 5.16.2.1.1, they said:

They have seemingly repurposed diagnostics mechanism to load arbitrary amazon-provided library from internet and inject it into book loading process, which allows them to add, well, anything they want without "updating firmware".
