My K3 and K4 still both work fine. I think it's just you.

While I imagine that only a few years ago, not many were still downloading ebooks from Amazon with the Keyboard Kindle for instance, I bet that many like me who had semi-retired it, suddenly started using it for downloads again, when Amazon removed their Download for USB option.
So there could be quite a lot of Amazon customers now downloading with older Kindles again. If such is the case, then Amazon surely realize just how much of a backlash might occur, if they disable downloading for those Kindle devices. I know that I for one, would immediately stop buying ebooks from Amazon, despite the angst in some author cases. I would then be contacting such an author and asking them to provide via Kobo or maybe their own website or if DRM-Free in that case, from the likes of Smashwords. But I m certainly prepared to go without, if I have to ... and my huge reading backlog would tide me over for a good long while. Hell, I might even go back to buying some physical books again ... not ideal, and not via Amazon, but needs must. And I already buy most of my ebooks from Kobo now anyway, due to the angst Amazon Kindle has given me, time and time again, and I know I am not alone in that. Since Amazon removed the Download for USB option, many of us have been on the cusp of cutting ties with them, completely. I imagine that could be a significant number of folk. So I'm not sure Amazon would risk that any time soon, despite how they have been depicted as not caring. Money still talks. Last edited by Timboli; 04-08-2026 at 01:37 PM. |

Maybe I should have checked the news first, as I've just seen the following.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=372958 Which likely means I am wrong. But lets see what happens. I've just now received the email from Amazon. Luckily I have no outstanding pre-orders to worry about. And just double checked that my Paperwhite is indeed 2nd generation. Last edited by Timboli; 04-08-2026 at 03:50 PM. |

I just used this method on the newest version of Kindle for PC (2.8.3) to remove DRM on books purchased last week. I think you are free (for now) to buy whatever kindle you want, if you want to stay in the amazon eco-system.

Some Reddit users are reporting Kindle for PC is now Kindle Legacy Reader. Does anyone know how that affects downloading/backing up files?
