Amazon dropping support for more Kindles

From May 20th 2026, Kindles released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be supported by Amazon.

So no registering, buying or downloading to such Kindles.

Affected devices include Kindle 1st and 2nd Generation, Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation.

Full email I received today in spoiler tags:

Spoiler:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for being a longtime Kindle customer. We're glad our devices have served you well for as long as they have. Starting May 20, 2026 — 14 to 18 years after their initial launches — we are discontinuing support for Kindle devices released in 2012 or earlier. Here's what this means for you:

* You can continue to read books already downloaded on these devices, but you will not be able to purchase, borrow, or download additional books on them after that date.
* If you deregister or factory reset these devices, you will not be able to re-register or use these devices in any way.

Affected devices include Kindle 1st and 2nd Generation, Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation.

To minimize any disruption, we're offering a promotional code for 20% off select new Kindle devices UVM3LHBFD as well as a £15 eBook credit that will be automatically added to your account after purchasing a new device (valid through June 20th, 2026, 11:59pm PST - Terms and Conditions apply). Our newer Kindle devices bring meaningful improvements in screen quality, performance and accessibility — and you'll have access to your complete Kindle library and the Kindle Store. You can also continue to read all your books on our free Kindle apps (Android, iOS, Mac, and PC) and Kindle for Web.

If you have any questions or require assistance, please visit https://www.amazon.co.uk/help/kindle/devicedeprecation.

Sincerely,
The Kindle Team

So basically, KFX is the only format Amazon will deliver to a device in the near future.

Also see the Amazon discontinuing support for older Kindles in May in the Amazon Kindle forum.

Hmm. Maybe I should try to get some charge into my old KB and fill it up.

Or App.

It's about control and surveillance. The older firmwares don't have that to the extent Amazon wants. Somehow they've changed how KFX works on the Paperwhite 3.

Changing the URL to ".com" shows that this is happening in the US as well, but I have not received the email. Has anyone here in the states gotten it yet?

Oh, crap. This means that my Kindle Paperwhite 2nd generation is now on borrowed time. Maybe another year before it isn't supported any longer.

I doubt your PW2 is on borrowed time. If Amazon can modify it remotely to prevent DRM removal, then it will still be supported.

Don't know why they included the Kindle 1 in the email, since it already lost the ability to have new Kindle books added after Download & Transfer via USB was removed, and hasn't been able to be registered with an Amazon account since 2022 as a result of the Sprint 3G network shutdown.

Because Amazon is listing all Kindles made before 2013.

I'm in the US and received the email today. I had already figured that this would be the last Kindle I owned and planned to convert the Kindle formatted books I had (not many) into a different format so I can read them on other devices once I replace the Kindle.

I haven't purchased an eBook for myself from Amazon in a very long time. Now that most ebooks are available to purchase or borrow from my library in the ePub format, that's what I've been reading.

I haven't received the email but changing the link to amazon.ca shows the same document. As did amazon.co.jp and a couple of other Amazon national sites.

Someone in theory could run their own pico or femto cell connected to Broadband. Unlikely, but possible.
