I recomand to look at it too. To give you more information:

Comments Cleaner allow to remove the formating of comment with a various options to get a great granularity in you result. The keys features is that it can also apply some formating to better standardize comments and it save the result into Calibre format (as HTML).

Clean Comments is a more radical option because it transform HTML comment into raw txt. It efficase and simple, but the main issue is that this is not how Calibre saves comments. So if you ever modify a comment afterwards, it will be converted back to HTML and you will need have to perform the plugin again.

I didn't even know that Job Spy had remove formatting action. And that exacly why in don't like Job Spy: Too many thing in one place while many of them could easily be included in a standalone plugin.

I'm sorry I didn't specify this sooner, as I should have. My only excuse is old age
In the comments box of the edit metadata screen are the two buttons that I used most often, the select all and remove formatting button, both circled in red on the attachment. The remove formatting is the one that has changed behavior and not working as it used to.
The clean comments plugins can't be used inside the edit metadata screen as far as I know. I do use them when I'm on the main book list.
When I'm checking a batch of books that I've just added I don't like going in and out of edit metadata, for workflow sake. Just clicking on the select all, then remove formatting was simple and fast. Then onto the next book to verify and fix if necessary.
