I also liked the 48 hours. It meant that as long as you read on your device every day it wouldn't turn off, which seems a reasonable rule of thumb to me. I haven't seen a turn-off rule since which makes as much sense. They're either premature or nonexistent. Now that I'm trying to husband my Aura One battery life I've gone with premature, but it can be annoying.

PocketBook, Onyx Boox, and Bigme have the option to automatically turn off after 48 hours.

In any case, I believe that times of less than a day are more focused on daily reading, which varies greatly from one user to another. Perhaps it is considered unnecessary to have an e-reader turned on while you sleep because you are certainly not going to read during that time. I have the auto-off setting set to 4 hours (and sometimes I have had it set to less time).

On Boox devices you can configure it. By default it's kind of annoying at 15 minutes but you can change it to one or two days.

I've never turned my Kobos off at all. I don't read on my Libra 2 every day, but I do read on it at least a couple of times per week, sometimes more often. I've yet to see a significant loss of battery during the time it's asleep.

If I knew I wouldn't read on my device for a couple of weeks or more, I'd turn it off. So far this has not happened. Any less time, I just let it sleep.

The circumstances of users and e-readers vary greatly. I don't think there is a general rule that applies to everyone equally. That's why I think the ideal solution is to have many options available and choose the one that best suits those particular circumstances.

In my particular case, I have numerous e-readers of different brands that I use interchangeably, and I don't know which one I will be using in the coming days, weeks (or even months). That's why I prefer to use a daily auto-off option.

We used to have a patch to change the shutdown time and it never worked.

Back to the original post title: End of an Era.

I am a very happy Sage user from the moment it was launched. So, with many others, I am eagerly awaiting a new Sage.
I regularly check the prices of the Kobo Sage to see if there are any sales, often a sign that a product will be discontinued.
Very strange: the price recently went up from 299 to 319 euro.
When I check the official Kobo site it says that the Kobo Sage is no longer available.

OMG... What is happening

That's not what it says. IT says the sage is Sold Out. That's different then no longer available.

You are right. It says Sold Out.
But Sold Out from the manufacturer is something else than Sold Out from a store, I am afraid.

And still no signs of a follow up.

€299 inc Irish VAT or £259 in UK, but sold out on UK and EU stores.

There are shortages and price rises due to chip companies concentrating on production for profitable AI customers till the bubble bursts. Crucial has even pulled out of retail. Open AI has been doing letters of intent to buy up 40% of wafer production from two big makers.

The UK Kobo site had the Sage a few days ago. Now sold out. All online sites sold out in Canada. Been sold out for months in the USA. It looks to me like they're clearing out stocks.

I got one of the last ones. I could have waited for an upgraded Sage, but I fear it will be color only. It's interesting that Kobo no longer has a BW reader larger that 6". Maybe they'll announce new ereaders in the spring. Maybe they're waiting for a new color eink screen. I thought they must be losing money (amazon has larger BW models) but I suppose new first time ereader buyers don't realize color contrast is worse, and they see the color as a big blingy plus.

Anyway. I snagged a Sage at the last moment. Very nice device.

If chip shortage were the cause, wouldn't we see that impact other devices? I see no shortage of Clara/KLC and Kindles. Just the Sage is sold out.

The Kobo Sage is still available in Japan. Although there are no discount offers, it is available for purchase. The demand for eReaders isn't high here.

Unfortunately, people read eBooks on their phones or tablets…
