Thank you for offering
Well, I do hope Kobo has not abandoned black and white readers entirely. At worst, I'd have to buy a new Sage, if it's still available somewhere in Europe next year. I'm reluctant to pay that much for a 4-year-old device with notoriously poor battery life, though.

I appreciate all the input; I have much to think about. There are options, at least sufficient options that I don't feel I have to jump on the GL4+ and can wait on developments. My sense, sadly, is that 8" B&W devices are kaput, but I'd love to be proved wrong.
So, that said, I hadn't really thought about battery replacement. In some ways, given how old the Aura One is, it would be nice to have a fresher device, but again, if they're not out there that's the end of that. And the Aura One is certainly good enough; in some ways better than a likely replacement as I don't want buttons anyway. So, replacement options. I was really slow on the uptake! At first I googled UBreakiFix and there's one about 20 miles away but the website wasn't especially forthcoming about price. And then, duh, I remembered I live in a university town and of course there's a business like that! And there is, but it has horrible reviews and obviously only gets by because of foot traffic. And then... I realized that one of my neighbors could replace the battery and would be happy to do it. But unfortunately I'm already in arrears when it comes to favors from him and my pride is kicking in. But I suppose I'll get over that, sigh, and at least it takes the pressure off having to do something now.So, way TL;DR: very helpful input and it's let me marshal my thoughts. Thank you. |

People keep saying/worrying about things like this, but it hasn't borne out. Sure, they didn't release a Libra BW, but they did release a Clara. Other brands are also releasing BW models alongside their color ones. Off hand I can't think of any brand that has actually gone color-only. The closest might be reMarkable, but they still sell the RM2. Even Bigme, who touts themselves "as a pioneer in color Eink smart devices" just released the Hibreak Pro with BW.

Many thanks for all the comments. I narrowed it down to the Clara bw and pocketbook verse, then wavered over whether actually to get the verse pro for the better screen. That led me down the rabbit hole of looking at the verse pro colour because it was only £5 more than the verse pro.
Anyway, I bought the verse and I love it. Definitely an upgrade from the glo hd. Supposedly a worse screen but I don’t notice any difference. I’m loving the buttons - and that I can customise them - and the rotation. The game changer though is the built in ADE. I can navigate to my county library on the web page (my library uses cloud library), choose my book and select download for offline reading and then (this is the game changing part) the built in ADE automatically authorises the DRM. No more connecting to a PC and fighting with the awful ADE programme. Send to pocketbook works brilliantly too. I’ve used the kobo store and sent books to the reader, too. I’ve also used the RSS feed to create a daily news feed. I hadn’t got around to trying instapaper on kobo so who knows, that may have been just as good. The pocketbook looks and feels lovely. A much more premium look and finish than my old kobo. I bought an official sleep cover which is also lovely. Can you tell I’m enjoying my new e-reader?! |

I haven't seen any for the Sage, but for others Kobo devices it doesn't seems hard: *using precautions, not doing it in a hurry, using plastic tools not to damage the cover nor to cut one's self, etc.. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Kobo+Gl...acement/143903 There is a comment on how to remove the battery without deforming it, which it's marked as dangerous.
