Microsoft actually goes out of their way to make sure that unsupported hardware is unsupported. Like adding fringe CPU instructions to their requirements. Maybe now it works, maybe tomorrow you can re-patch it, but they'll catch up. MS is worse than Apple in this regard.

Some of it is deliberate.
We are talking EXTERNAL stuff.

Why does a network printer/MFC need a new driver for an OS change? The print job commands are still the same.

My USB HD tuner lost support after W7 (Not all USB devices rely only on internals for use like storage devices do. Oh Wait, my USB floppy no longer works )

The obsoleting of older hardware is because of PC partnerships that have hit the doldrums because most stuff is now fast and featured enough for mainstream users that see little need to replace that which gets the job done.
The few upgrades I have done: SSD, More RAM, Bigger display. All are easy on a desktop unit with little special tools (if any).
