Any possible update on 4.23 for Win 7Pro?

Hi, I'm using Calibre 4.23 on Windows 7 Pro 64bit which has worked flawlessly for years with my Kindle Voyage.
I tried connecting a 7th gen Paperwhite via usb and Caliber wouldn't recognize it. Is there a solution without updating Win 7?

The never Kindle variants require an updated driver so I think you're shit out of luck.

Nope!
The building blocks and OS requirements (and hardware) have changed and maintaining 7 additional version streams would be a nightmare.

(where do you stop? Windows ha 4 versions, Older Apples have 5 versions)

When I started, I used a really old laptop as a Remote Desktop Connection Terminal (Calibre was on my home office desktop) to document my paperback collection elsewhere in my home. RDC terminals do not need much of anything in the way of crunch power, just a CAT5 connection (for solid speed). I had a barcode gun and a Flatbed scanner (for covers not found during the add. My collection had a lot of pre barcode / ISBN era books) Took me about a year of 20 book batch, evenings to get those 900 beat into submission.
Hardware requirement also changes. First to go was the AMD Athelon system (barely ran the Vista trial). Next was everything 32Bit

Currently I have a lot of computers and none will run W11 (not that I like that. W7 was my fav).
You won't believe where I have seen really old systems (W2000, XP) still in use. (These systems are NOT connected to the internet.)
We have 2 choices (sorta). Update our hardware (Face it, W7 is ~2 decades old) or not use newer accessories.

As a last resort I tried connecting the Paperwhite to the PC/Calibre using the lead from my Kindle Voyage and low & behold it works. I can now transfer books from Calibre to the Paperwhite.

Thanks for the replies though folks.

The other cord was possibly a 'Charge only' cord (even the OS can't see the device)?

Is there any reason you've not upgraded to Windows 10 so you can run the current calibre?

Windows 10 is now out of support, so it's either Windows 11 or Linux.

But the OP is still running an OS that's even more out of support then Windows 10. If the OP lives in the EU, he can register for another year of support.

If his computer won't support Windows 11, we could still install it. If he doesn't want to, then Windows 10 is it. Besides, Windows 10 could be the only way to be able to update calibre for the OP.

Here's how to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware.

Installing Win 11 on unsupported HW is a way to have bricked computer. Madness.

Most people without an MS account don't want to create one. The EU Win10 support is thus not free.

I've seen it with my own eyes!

You seem to be implying that most Windows users in the EU do not have a Microsoft account - what is your evidence for that?

@Jon - the extended support for Win 10 'for free' is not an 'EU only' offer, its also available to anyone who has an MS account in this part of the world. I suspect the only area that it is not 'for free' is North America or maybe even - just the USA.

The thing is, it doesn't matter that Windows 10 is no longer supported as the OP is running Windows 7 which has been even longer without support. And it's the only way for the OP to run the latest calibre.

The one year extended support for Windows 10 is available in Canada. I used it for one friend whose laptop will not install Windows 11 without playing games that may result in his laptop needed a total re-install.

Unfortunately the only way to find out if it works is to try it. One of the computers a friend of mine owns was upgraded to Windows 11 despite reported issues. It worked for about 1 month and then Patch Tuesday came around. Oooopppsss...
