New Paperwhite 12th gen cable charge only?

Call me stupid, but I can’t seem to be able to use the USB C cable that came with my new kindle for data transfer. Is it a charging-only cable? Is this yet another way Amazon is discouraging the sideloading of books through USB transfer?

Using a different cable lets me mount and transfer files without issue. This is exactly the kind of nonsensical restriction that sours long-term customers’ opinions of Amazon.

Are you, by any chance, using macOS or Linux?

If you're on Linux, make sure to start Calibre before you connect your Kindle, because it's using MTP and only 1 application can use MTP at the same time. By default, this will be your file browser, so boot up Calibre first.

If you're on macOS, you need an application for MTP. Either the official app or openMTP. Both work fine.

The included cable should be fine for both charge and data. Have you tried the cable on a different device? If it still doesn't work on something else, contact Amazon Customer Support and get a replacement cable. Amazon isn't pulling any tricks. Their own User Guide tells you that you can use their cable for data.

Quote:
USB-C/power port: You can use the supplied USB cable to connect your Kindle to a computer for charging the battery. You can also use the USB cable to transfer files to your Kindle. To charge your Kindle from a power outlet, you will need the Amazon 5W charger (sold separately) for the USB cable.

Sounds like it may be a problem with the supplied cable. Do you have any other USB-C devices to try the cable with to see if it does data?

Yup. Didn’t expect for it to be a bum cable.

Sorry to be alarmist.
