Sideloaded fonts on 12th gen paperwhite
The new paperwhite arrived today and it seems that, while sideloaded fonts work, they don’t stick: after closing and reopening a book, the font reverts to Bookerly.

Firmware 5.17.0.

On a sideloaded AZW3 book, the font does stick. Any ideas other than converting everything to AZW3?

I use custom fonts and have only seen this issue one time. I cannot reproduce it.

But I do not normally side load anything. Is that what you are doing? That may explain why I cannot reproduce it. (will try it now...)

Hah, this has become a fascinating phenomenon among Kindle users. Now, it’s even appearing on brand new devices—it’s unbelievable. I have a Kindle Scribe and an 11th-generation Kindle Basic. After one of the updates, my Scribe suddenly couldn’t use custom fonts anymore, but my Basic Kindle works just fine (with the latest system). This seems to be an intermittent yet widespread issue. According to a Google search, people have been reporting this problem since last year, and some even got a replacement from Amazon without resolving it, though there are cases where it was fixed. My suggestion is to request a replacement from Amazon, as it’s clear they haven’t given this issue enough attention (since it still exists on both new systems and devices).

Some books are loaded from Calibre (AWZ3) and the custom fonts are fine.

Other books loaded from the Kindle store all have this problem.

My Scribe on 5.16.21 is fine with all books.

Okay, so the issue is with a KFX download from your Amazon library. Another hypothesis bytes the dust.

Also my side-loaded KFX (Scribe) displays my custom font so again, no reproduction.

Would you mind posting a listing of your /fonts folder?

Another hypothesis: "something" in the /fonts folder is interfering with opening the custom font. When the open fails, Kindle reverts to default Bookerly.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried removing the unneeded ones and the problem persists.

I hadn't tried a side loaded KFX file and just did - same problem, so it's not just store loaded books.

I recently returned a gen 1 scribe for having this issue, and have bought a gen 2 scribe in the hopes that the new devices won’t have this problem. Looks like the problem persists, even on the new devices. If my new scribe (arriving December 4) still has this problem, I’m sticking with Kobo!!!

I'm on 5.16.9 and I've never encountered this problem. Majority of my fonts are in .otf format, a few of them in .ttf.

Firmware update 5.17.1 had fixed the font problem I was having on my Gen 11 Paperwhite.

Then I got a Gen 12...

It arrived with 5.17.0 (which I didn't even know was a thing) and now whatever sideloaded font I'm using defaults to Bookerly whenever I blink. I'm guessing the problem will be fixed by an update to Gen 12's equivalent of 5.17.1, if that ever happens.

Other than that, I'm delighted with the new Paperwhite. For me, it was worth it.
